I spoke to someone today who suffers from test anxiety and didn't do well on her MCAT as a result. However, she went through multiple hypnosis sessions and saw a great improvement in her test score the second time she took the MCAT. I'm skeptical about this but did any of you try hypnosis for test anxiety ?

Sounds interesting. I myself suffer from test anxiety. I actually freaked out during my MCAT, which resulted in a horrific score. Does anyone have any idea how to work through the anxiety?

I found that taking enough practice full lengths at the same time of the real thing and in a similar location such as your university library made taking the actual exam much easier. Anything you can do to gain familiarity with real testing conditions will help. A solid jog before taking the test can work wonders for calming nerves. I even listened to some stand up comedy on the way to the test to put me in a good mood. Having a good laugh before taking the test really kept me positive heading in.

My doctor offered to let me try a few different pre test anxiety meds to try with practice tests. He said to take my practice test under exact testing conditions at the same time and weekday as my scheduled test, but to take the medication an hour before and keep a log of how they affect me. To see if it would help without impairing me cognitively on the actual test. I'm sure its not easy to get a doctor to do this for you but my doctor knows me well and has been giving me advice about the mcat and admissions for a long time now. For the record he's not blindly prescribing benzos, he's treated me for post surgical panic attacks so its a little different. If you have real anxiety issues you might try to find a doctor that is willing to help you try something similar, they may be more willing since it would be a one time prescription for just a couple pills. I didn't actually ask my doctor, he suggested it after I told him I had a panic attack during my September 12 test. I don't think ill try it though, anxiety medications make me sleepy, but I know a few people who take medication for things like tests or before dentist appt a or job interviews, and it really helps them.
