I tried searching "LOR" without luck. Strange! Anyway, I didn' assign a 4th letter before because I didnt know I'd get one.... so now that my SubI submitted a letter, I'd like to assign the letter to programs I had applied to previously. Any way to do this? thanks

Despite your search, this has been discussed before.

You can add letters at any time before ERAS closes.

For those who need to do this, go through the program selecting on ERAS (search programs) and choose the program you applied to... place a check by the new LOR, click select and it'll be available for the programs to download immediately.

I would like to add a question to this thread:

let's say program X has already downloaded my application with 3 LORs (completed the requirement), and then I added one more LOR to my ERAS and "select" for it to be sent to program X. Will program X be notified of the addition? or will the program director see this addition ONLY IF he decides to go over my application the second time?

Basically, if my first 3 LORs were not too impressive and my file ended on the "no interview" stack, a program director will not even know that my 4th LOR is co-authored by OBAMA and McCain? 🙂 Wishful thinking, of course....

Programs will be notified of all new information received on all applicants.

However, once rejected, it's unlikely anyone will go back and look at the letter. We don't review every incoming piece of information, and focus on applications that are active. It's unlikely that a single letter would mean the difference between an interview and not. And if so, then why didn't you include it up front?

Dear aProgDirector:
Thank you for your valuable input. The reason why I can't include a LOR up front is because I will not have a letter from an EM director until the end of august or september (My school do not allow us to do an EM rotation until we're in our 4th year). So, given that situation, let's say that I have an EM elective in August and one in October. And with experience, I perform really well in the October rotation and got an excellent letter from an EM director at the end of my rotation. By then, my application might have already been ruled out by many programs due to lack of strong endorsement and will not be re-reviewed.

So the dilemma is, should I turn in my application as soon as possible, even though I know for a fact that my application can be improved with stronger endorsement in the later months? Or should I hold and apply late so I can wait for the LOR?

Perhaps you should do well in August and get a letter then? 🙂

It's a dilemma. There is no easy answer. Apply early and you might be rejected. Apply late and you could be too late, or interview slots may already be taken. You should check program deadlines.

If you apply early, only send 3 LOR's and save #4 for the rotation in Oct.

I thought September 1st was the earliest date to apply as no programs will look at your app until then...

is this incorrect? Why are you applying in July?
