hi all!
its time to choose some school for me/ itook a placement test for dental assistent. my results were good. then i decided to change my mind because i am 25 and i want to have some kids and so on? so i dont have enough time for school in the future. and i am Russian that make me feel bad, because i think it will be very difficult for me to attend any school later, if not right now. so i set up my mind on dental hygiene programm. you all know, that its not cheap and my husband worry about it. he met some dental assistent at work and ask some questions about it... so she said... its hard to study, and she tried to get on that programm to but she couldnt. and she said that you have to pass some exam or something like that to be chosen and find a job after school. i am sad, because now i dont know what to do... my test result for dental hygiene werent perfect like for dental asisstent. my writiing test was lower then should be and other ones were good.
so why am i telling you all this... i am sure that maybe that girl was smarter then me, maybe not/// but maybe she just jealous? and maybe i should try it any way? but my husband wants me to try dental asistent first. but i feel that if i attend that school, i will not have anough strengh to attend dental hygiene school in the future.
some woman i talked about dental hygiene programm didnt tell me anithing about some difficulties like that because what they want is money only...
i need your advice and some words about school or programm itself

My girlfriend is in currently dental hygiene school right now, and it can be a difficult program.

Many schools have prerequisites that you must complete at a community college or university prior to matriculation. The curriculum is heavily based on science and yes, there is a board exam at the end of the two year program.

I am sure you are an intelligent person, but from what I have heard (from friends) is that it is difficult to take science courses, in the US, when english is not your first language.

Dental Hygiene is a competitive program, and you really need to speak with the program director of a school in your area to see what the requirements are and how long it will take you to get there

Both Hygiene and assisting are good careers, however hygiene pay will be much better.

Good luck!

I think you should apply to dental hygiene school instead of going to dental assisting school. You'll just waste valuable time and money. Plus, it sounds like you want to be a hygienist. I'm a hygienist in California that will be starting dental school in the fall. I think dental hygiene school is very manageable. You just have to study and keep on top of your clinical requirements. Some general prerequisites include anatomy, physiology, microbiology, general chemistry, nutrition, an English course, math, and psychology. I think you should go for it. It doesn't hurt to apply and try. Mos hygiene programs are 2 years, earning you an associates degree. You can also get a bachelor degree (4 year program), but you'll still get paid the same. At least, in California, this is the case. I went to school 16 months at San Joaquin Valley College in Rancho Cucamonga, CA and earn $350-$400 per day (1 hour per patient). Good luck! You can do it!!!!😛

maybe she's referring to her prereq as well? I think you can do anything you put your heart and soul into.

hey girls! thanks. you set my mind on it. but it seems my husband doesnt beleieve in me!!!!!🙁 i am sad. he thinks i cant make it if most americans cannot do that. he wants me to go to dental asisstent first and i dont want... i am confused. now someoen explained me more and i can imagine why 400 people apply for that program and onle 15 is chosen. every person will have an interview after Some general prerequisites and only 15 will make it. so i am kinda sad. so i have to have A in all my prerequisites!!!!!!!!!! and i feel i cant do it. my english isnt perfect🙁 for that school maybe. but my algebra score was 83 or so. itsnt not to bad! right?
what would you do in my situation? my husband`s and my mind are different.

can someone tell me more about general prerequisites? did you write essay? tests? how often? should you discuss something in a class and so on... just want to understand what way do students get marks...

Hgienetown may also be a good place for you to post some of your questions:

My sister is a hygienist and she makes $40/hr in NY State. It took her 4 years to get her degree - 2 years for prerequsits (General Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy, Math, English, Psych. etc.) and then another 2 years of the hygiene program.

Anyway, try posting some questions on the boards of Hygiene Town - you'll probably get some better answers from there.

Good luck!

what questions do teachers ( whoever) ask on your interview after the prerequsits when they try to choose people on hygiene program?
is it very important to get A for my prerequsits?
thanks

please know your facts before giving advice to anyone. it is not as difficult as you think it is. it requires a little more work than assisting which only requires you to hold the suction. frankly all those dental assisting schools are big scams. open the newspaper find an entry level dental assisting job, and the office will train you (thats how i did it).

Hygiene pays 2-3 times than assisting and is a lot more rewarding than assisting. do you want to clean the chair and hold suction for the rest your life. your husband is a ***** for not believing in you. You have to believe in yourself. leave his ass and find someone who believes in you. There are many hygiene schools around the country and you will get into one of them. I know there is one in Baltimore, (BCC i think) which is very easy to get in. I know someone with single digit IQ that got in and is working as a hygenist right now.

Brick walls are there for those who dont really want it. And never let anyone to tell you , you cant do it.

It would be good if you stop whining about everything. Others can't tell you what to say on the interviews. You should be able to think on your own and come up with answers. Questions like the one you mentioned is a fair game and it is not hard to answer at all. Basically you have to prove to the interviewers that you have more to bring to the program than the other applicants and you will make a good hygienist. Make up your mind and go for what you want.
