I am really weak when it comes to numbers and I am worried about the quantitative reasoning section. I've only taken college algebra and that was 4 years ago. I've heard about dat destroyer, but I'm confused on what to purchase. I've also heard Chad's videos are good. I'm also worried about not having a calculator. So suggestions on what study material to use as well as study tips when it comes to this section?

Start by watching the math videos from Chad coursesaver (don't think they're available at the moment from chadsvideo.com) to get the basics down. Then do practice tests from math destroyer and understand each problem really well.

You'll have an on-screen calculator on the test but depending on which testing center you go to, you might be taking the test on an old computer with a slow responding calculator so try not to use a calculator when doing practice problems. Get good at approximating numbers and time won't be as big of an issue 🙂

Also, memorize the formulas in math destroyer and some common conversions:
F = 9/5 C + 32
2.54 cm = 1 inch
3 feet= 1 yard
12 inch = 1 foot
5280 ft = 1 mile
1760 yards = 1 mile
1 mile = 1.6 km
1 kg = 1000 grams
1 kg = 35.27396 oz
1 kg = 2.2 lb
2 pint = 1 cup
4 cup = 1 quart
4 quart = 1 gallon

Should I get the math destroyer or just the quantitive reasoning book?

there is a calculator but it is highly recommended not to use it because it will waste time. Also I did not find chad's QR videos as useful as his science.

Hi lynnm,

The QR section is indeed challenging for a lot of students, so you are not alone. Because you already know you are weak in this area it is very important you come up with an attack plan to make your weakness a strength. The only way to to do this is to go back to the basics and do a lot of review work. After that practice, practice, practice. The QR is the last section of the DAT and at this point students are very tired and then have to solve 40 problems in 45 minutes. That's tough! There is a calculator on the QR section only some students find it helpful, but most find it easier to tackle the problems without using it.Timing will be the issue, "not enough of it". Dental schools are much more forgiving with the score on the QR section, you should aim for at least an 18 or higher.

I have included the link below to the prometric tutorial that will give you an idea of the test and also the online screen calculator they provide.

Hope this helps and good luck

Nancy

Truthfully, the only thing you need is destroyer. You only need to learn enough math to do well on the QR section, and the destroyer covers everything. I would recommend practice tests just for you to get used to the time pressure. Keep redoing destroyer over and over until you can't get a single problem wrong!
