I am about to start my junior year, and I have held a >3.85 GPA, a research position, volunteering, and a couple clubs. I have literally been busting my ass because this is my dream and I intend on making it happen.

Enter this premed girl who literally has barely any extracurricular activities (certainly nothing super significant IMHO), but a 4.0 GPA and is spending this entire summer prepping for the MCAT while all my time this summer as been taken up by my research position (which fingers crossed is going to get me a publication, I'm working on a few figures at this point:xf:). I guess my annoyance stems from this girl telling me how she has a much better chance than me because she has a perfect GPA and is going to get a perfect MCAT because she is spending all summer just on that.

I guess my question is will someone who has pretty much a perfect GPA/no EC's be at an advantage towards someone with a slightly lower GPA but more EC's? Honestly the MCAT is irrelevant at this point because neither of us has taken it.

A high GPA and high MCAT will get you secondaries and II from good schools. Your ECs, LORs, life experiences, maturity, passions, etc. will garner you an acceptance.

You can't expect a high MCAT+GPA to make up for a lack of ECs, or a lot of ECs to make up for a low GPA+MCAT (unless you're a Rhodes scholar who did teach for america and is also a military vet)

She sounds really annoying, but my advice is to not worry about what some obnoxious girl is doing. Focus on doing what you need to do as well as you can. Good luck!

Agree lots of annoying peers but focus on what you need to do. Minding your own business and doing the best you can is the smart move. Someone as obnoxious as your lab mate may not make it very far, but do you really care?

Ultimately she won't be able to get in to all the schools without the complete package... maybe with a couple gap years to get some EC's, but it looks pretty bad to be an automaton without EC's. Just do you, and try to to do your best on the MCAT when it comes to that.

We are making the assumption she gets a good MCAT score. I know many people that studied 3-4 months and got high to mid 20s( old test).

This is me vs my roomate lol
I used to be super jealous, then I realized, we live in Canada, where our school has a 3.9GPA/32MCAT cutoff, after which point you are judged soley on your supplemental application and primary activities
Hers will be nearly blank bc she has no ECs, research, jobs, shadowing, etc.

I am now more proud that I got a 3.95 while working during UG, rather than be jealous of her 4.0 while doing nothing

Wow a 4.0? She will probably be too smart to do well in CARS!

But more seriously, comparison is the thief of joy. You're on track to achieve your dream. Ignore her

I had virtually no ECs- no coins, no research, minimal volunteering- and I'm going to be a doctor. Don't compete. You do you and just hope it works out. It isn't a competition.

Someone with no ECs is not going to be a doctor, even with a 520 MCAT and a 4.0.

And she may study all she wants, but there's no guarantee that she'll be fine. Keep in mind the median MCAT score is 25 or so (old scale).

Also, people lie. How do you know that she actually has a 4.0? Your GPA is Harvard caliber, BTW.

The only person you should be comparing yourself to is yourself.

Focus on your own medical school goals. Things like this will hardly matter once you are in medical school which I am sure you will get into some program md or do.

this is exactly why i dont tell people at my school that im premed, nor do i engage with other premed students. it always turns into a big pissing contest and i honestly dont care.

I know it is not my place to rant. But I did not see your schedule to include any place for working. Back then while taking full-time class, I work 30 hours a week to try to earn some money for school and family at minimum wage; wasn't a U.S. citizen at the time, thus no Grants given. You guys young premed really have better use of your time hating each other for small things.

Next time she starts undermining your confidence, smile mysteriously with a quirked eyebrow and say, "We'll see."

If she has a 4.0 and actually studies for a few months, she will probably do very well.
Not necessarily. Lots of people are subpar test-takers. Especially on a marathon test like the MCAT. Also frequently happens on the SAT, ACT, etc.

Huh. Guess the girls at my school just didn't measure up lol
Same. Every time my sport team travels to big state universities we are reminded that our standards for good looking are so different

How do people that cant handle 4 hours of intense testing survive all the midterm and finals weeks with a 4.0 though?
