I've been ortho assisting before I start dental school and by the end of the work day I feel like I'm going to die. I see patient after patient after patient and my body can't take it. I can't go all day without passing gas!

I never realized how hard it is to hold in the smallest fart for so long. For the past 4 years I could just release some pressure between classes outside in the open air. Now I'm dying by the end of the day to take the trash out behind the office. We see a high volume of patients and its hard to get away to depressurize. Am I the only one?

Luckly, as the dentist you will be able to go back to your office between appointments. Even if there is a patient in the chair, just say that you have to grab something, make an important phone call, or take the trash out 😀

Wasn't a problem when I was assisting...beano anyone?

Thanks for the laughs!

 How often do you have to fart, bro? Just go to the bathroom? Or act like you're going outside to get some fresh air every once in awhile. :meanie:

or just let her rip when you have to and just blame it on someone else. 😀

You're required by law to take breaks and lunch during your work day. Just go to the restroom during those times. If you need to go more then that, maybe you should look into a different occupation?

Isn't there medication for this problem? I always see it on the 6 O Clock news zzz

Edit: And don't the patient know after-a-while? If I'm on a date and hold it forever, my stomach makes noises. It's not hunger noises, but rather, its high pitched rumbling zzzz

1. Buy cat
2. Bring cat to clinic
3. Blame cat for smell
4. ????
5. Profit

a plug?

I guess it's not every day, but it kills me after a while. I try to play it off to the patients by saying "man I'm hungry". With a staff of about 8 of us I can't just let one go in a supply closet and wait for the reaction to go to completion bc that's the worst when you think you're alone and someone walks into the crossfire. All of us staff normally eat lunch together so I don't find much alone time.

Ive never noticed any problem with gas, but I guess I don't do well when I have to bottle up.

I think I may need to increase the frequency of my movements and go solo lunch on days that it's bad. I'll also need an office with a window when I am practicing.

I have read that the average person farts 8 - 14 times a day. More or less depending on diet.

This thread is awesome.

That is true (Dr. Oz...Said so also:laugh:)

I guess if anyone confronts you about it and it is anywhere around noon time, you can say "chances are, my friend, that you have passed gas 7 times today and will do so 7 more times before you retire to bed."

You're not alone on this, so don't feel bad. I have the same concern, unfortunately a dentist farting is about as bad as it gets because the patient MUST breathe through their nose. For the patient that is a total jerk... bombs away jerk! :meanie:

All kidding aside, just hold them in like any respectful adult does, and go snap one off in your office or the bathroom (bathroom unless you know your office is off limits to others). If it's toxic, use the bathroom or outside. I've tried to alter my diet to reduce gas, but my wife and I have decided that pretty much everything I eat causes gas. So I can't blame it on the broccoli or beans, maybe just the dogs.

you might want to take a look at what you're eating. you might have an allergy or ibs??

hahaha hilarious!

i thought u were just going to complain and moan about working when i first started reading..

maybe eat less healthy? 😛

You can just tell your assistant to apply suction to your butt while you let one rip.

Hahaha...this is awesome I though you were gonna bitch about dental school. I lately changed to a vegetarian diet and I gotta tell ya I pass gas way to much. I say just let it stealthily go but I know its way more fun to let it rip. lol.

haha i remember this from somewhere, what movie?

🙂 It's not from a movie. It's from a south park episode. It's the one where the gnomes start stealing Butters' underwear and then end up explaining their business model to the kids (except there's no cat).

haha ahhh yes, i definitely remember now. awesome

Eat semi-liquid: well cooked oats meal soup, vegetable and fruits blends, muffins, chew very well and eat slow and little, keep warm and relaxed, sleep well.

You are very young , very likely you swallow food too fast and leave hard work to your digestive system which just retaliate back …

eat also yougurt, bananas, mangos, avoid oil, cold meat. you are very stressed, slow down !

Affordable fiber to help regularity.

Make sure you have no constipation ! That is very important!
Also dress warm enough so digestive system works better.

What I had I was just a noise inside that I can NOT control !!!
I even got a prescription pill to make my digestive system to calm down.

After taking it for a week, I started a new job which is much less stressful environment.
Then my problem was gone !

But today I still have to be very careful with what I eat, how much to eat .

I think Mexican sounds better

Yo I worked as an ortho assistant as well and had the same problem! Whenever I had to let one rip I'd either go to the dental lab and pour up an impression so no one could hear it (b/c of that loud vibrating machine) or if it was silent and deadly I'd turn on the high speed suction and wave it around in the general area where I was sitting....worked like a charm.

But on a serious note, do you eat cereal for breakfast with milk? You might be lactose-intolerant b/c as soon as I stopped drinking milk or eating too much cheese, the farts stopped too! Give it a try! Or try those lactase supplements whenever you eat dairy...

LOL this is my favorite thread on SDN by far...something different than "Do I have a chance at dental school with these stats???...blah blah blah" Hahaha

this is disgusting

lmao what the hell do you eat?

1. Buy cat
2. Bring cat to clinic
3. Blame cat for smell

5. Profit

Hahahaha this is the best thread I've read on SDN too. I've never laughed so hard so many times from one thread. :roflcopter:😆

Haha the dentist I shadowed went to his office between patients nearly 50% of the time, so as a dentist I don't think you will have a problem.

If one slips out you could just blame it on your assistant!

I think it may be my infrequent bowel movements (once every few days) as well as my diet. I've never had to watch what I eat and it may be catching up with me.

I think it tends to occur on very busy days when I truly have no down time to increase the partial pressure of methane of the employee break room.

Seriously, become an Oral Surg.....in the O.R. you can float one and it just rises up the impermiable gown....you get the full effect of your "bouquet" and can blame it on the anes cart, stanky dried blood, etc...
🙂

Woah dude, this is getting too serious...sounds like you are trying to relate the DAT Gen Chem section about partial pressures to your farts...lets just stick to finding a solution to your gaseous problem
