Im 19 yrs old and in my 2nd year of college....I have been throwing around the major undecided for both of these years and not really been interest in any of the classes i have been taking. But i have done well anyways....but here is the bad thing....My freshman year i was taking Eng101 (which i do not like literature, no offense to anyone who does b/c people who know their lit. are really smart!) and well anyways i got into a big car wreck the weekend my Reasearch paper was due ( which i was planning to do that weekend and was worth boo-koo's of points) So i just quit going to class and got a E. 🙁
I retook it and still being a slacker (freshman and not so good at lit.) pulled a lowsy C 😱 Now im in Eng102 not doing all that great expecting a B-C. I think im loosing a grip i cannot stand reading stuff others wrote which im not interested in. I could read science textbooks all day and never get bored... I will be getting my Associates in Science after this coming semester and current GPA=3.667 ........ :scared:

Do i still have a chance... now that i KNOW what i want out of life?

Thanks for reading...everyones 2cents counts...Im willing to take the good with the bad!

You should be fine... 3.6 is still pretty good, just keep the good grades up and you will be good as gold

Well, I think you are definitely still okay. It would look much worse if you pulled C's in your science classes. I do suggest getting into a bacc. program instead of the associates. I don't believe many, if any, students are admitted with an associates. Just find a good 4 year program and redeem yourself. Many have made worse grades and gotten in.

Flossy is right. A 3.6 GPA is still competitive. However, you need to stop slacking because that just might start to carry over into your science classes. Those two bad lit grades might come up during the interview and you had better learn from your mistakes and improve your study skills by that time. Being lazy isn't a very good excuse and might not sound so good to the interviewer. 😀

i definately would have never viewed myself as a slacker but in Eng. i definately am....It just doesnt hold any interest to me. I am getting into a Bac. program and hoping to pull it off in 2-3 years. Learning from my mistakes is tough to swallow.....but definately something i am now experiencing

(tinman your dog is so cute...its a pug right...i have a pug he's black and spolt...thank you for posting you always have good advice! 🙂

Flossy, is an E considered an F? but anyways, a 3.6 GPA is still pretty nice and since you still have some tine, you can pull that up easily if you hang in there. when you're almost done with bachelor's degree is when you should start to panic b/c its going to be hard to pull up your GPA significantly.

An E is the same thing as an F. Now remember that when you apply that F will be added in with your GPA along with the C you got when you re-took the class. Most schools will replace the F with the new grade but AADSAS is not that kind. So the question I have is if your GPA is 3.6 with the F added in or is that the GPA your school is telling you? I also had an F freshman year that has killed my GPA and I think it's the reason I had to apply two years in a row to get in. The first year I applied my GPA was around 3.3 when it would have been over a 3.5 without that damn F. It took me another year to get it back up over that 3.5 mark with the F dragging it down.

Thats the GPA the school has calculated......I refigured it with the F and it's 3.11... :scared: But i do have about 2 1/2 yrs. of school left I'm sure it can be brought up by then right????? 😕

Don't sweat it man. A LOT of people would love to be in your position with a 3.11 with 2.5 yrs to go. 👍

not just that but i think most of the applicants have some blemishes in their academic history....so he's not alone in that department

OP: when i read the title of your thread, i thought you had killed somebody 😀

Dude, dont even stress about it. A 3.6 gpa is not bad at all. You still have 2.5 years to bring up that 3.1, and im pretty sure that d-schools will look and see that you improved over the years. I hate lit. also...

Personally, I think you're overreacting. Your GPA is sick enough to get you in to the majority of schools you apply--assuming you don't pi$$ away the DAT. You're on the right track. 👍

you have a good chance if you maintain your gpa while getting a bachelors.

Ya that F wont be to bad... Lots of people have blemishs on their records, hell i have 2 C+s and 2 C's (I hate chemistry!) and im pretty confident (Well maybe optomistic should be the word) that I will get in somewhere if i do well on the dat. Dont sweat it, you will be fine with another 2 years to go to bring that up

are you a foreigner? you should be careful because dental schools look for well rounded individuals in all fields. i got a b in my comp 1 class as well, if that makes you feel any better. Take the grade you will get and no more b's from now on, that way you can make up for it. good luck! 🙂

what happens if u get an E, then an F,before u finally get an A, would that mean ur grade for english would be 0.0 x 4 + 1.0 x 4 + 4.0 x 4 = 20 / 12 = 1.67 average for english?!!!! AND would that be 1.67 for 4 credits of english, or 1.67 for 12 credits of english?

Its the BCP GPA that matters most.....

my question to the OP is are you in a junior college setting, reason being is that you said you were getting an associates degree..

Show that your GPA in english doesnt mean anything on your english portion of DAT

E=F. It's the exact same thing. So it would be 0.0 x 4 + 0.0 x 4 + 4.0 x 4 and that would be for 12 credits of english making your GPA 1.3.

yes! i am at a CC college.

I would be carefull with the grades you get in CC. CC tend to be easier on academics than a 4 year university. Getting an F at a CC doesn't look good anywhere. Even if you don't like something its no excuse for poor grades.

My intent in my response is not to discourage you in any way, your gpa looks great as of now, and doing well on the DAT will be key for interviews.

You might be able to petition Academic Affairs to change your E to a W if you just stopped going to class as long as you can document it i.e. bring in doctor's note, etc.

Eng101 and Eng102 are listed as pre-req. for my top choice (Kentucky). Do they look at these classes just for international students more or whatty?????

they might bring it up during the interviews... But i honestly dont think it will make much of a difference. Some students have difficulties with some classes, but this wont make u a better or bad dentist. Im sure adcoms can relate to how some students messed up in the past, dont let this get you down... if dentistry is truly what you want, u will do it. Just kick the DATs A$$ and u will be good to go 😉

hey...don't feel too bad about hating comp... I'm a huge fan of literature and i absolutely HATED comp in college...boring as crap...but it kept me in practice with writing technically and pushing myself to do something even though i really didn't feel like it...so i guess i can say it was a good experience regardless. just try to view it in a positive light and hopefully others will too... even in courses you can't stand, you still take away some knowledge and some appreciation of your struggle with as well as the accomplishments/struggles of others. besides...in anything you do in life you have a responsiblity to yourself and others to communicate well...might as well get in some practice where it's only your grade that's on the line ;-)
