I did a search on "gunners".

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I consider gunners people who spend an unreasonable amount of time studying, with their lives centered around getting As and nothing else. Or people who sabotage others in order to get the grade.

👎

for the 12937810928th time, work ethic alone does not a gunner make

although, even if it did, I still wouldn't count as a gunner LOL

I think at some point in time we probably all have had a gunner moment or been a little gunnerish, but that tends to fade the farther you get into school. I would imagine after four more years of med school I'll see less of this, but then there are the unique individuals who just don't know when to stop like people that make threads saying "I'm a gunner" those people I could probably do without.

...I do some of those things.

BRB, googling how to make a noose.

Also, seriously, F Digoxin dosing.

Gunner = person that actively sabotages others for the sake of bettering his/her performance

Gunner =/= person that is ambitious and willing to work hard to achieve lofty goals

These definitions are often confused in these parts.

Oh, cuz I saw in other topics, especially that recent "pre-study for anatomy" the term gunner got slung around. I routinely pre-study for classes due to work and etc.

Whatever, gunners gonna gun...just don't get in the way of me getting mine.

We need to sticky and lock a glossary so we can stop this being misused so often. Gunners are not hardworkers, ambitious, or even just pricks. Gunners are those who will "gun" down those around them to get ahead. That's what they are in the medical world, no idea who else has used the term, but I wish we could just be clear on this because everyone thinks it's cool to call people gunner now (don't understand that tbh) but don't use it properly.

Not all gunners work hard. True gunners don't need to study.

Dr. Michael Bergen from Two guys, a girl, and a pizza place is the ultimate gunner.

loss of innocence?

Ok, I can see that now 🙂 All that kind of bs was one of the main reasons I left northwestern undergrad. The fact is there will always be kids that think inhibiting others will help them. It probably wont stop, but I hope they steer clear of me!

corrected; taking others down is sine qua non for gunner status

This one is my favorite...

 I like this one.

Seriously though, people use the word too much. "Gunner" is strictly reserved for those that sabotage/back stab for personal gain. In our case, for med school admission, for higher test scores, etc.

I don't seem to come across any "gunners" at my school, is this mainly an nerdy Internet term or something? I often help my neighbors out in lab classes. It would take some major guts for someone to mess with my lab results though. Although sometimes I feel like my TA could fit the description of a gunner!

Wait until med school. Gunners in undergrad are more like tadpoles than frogs -- they haven't achieved the full level of ugliness. A gunner is NOT someone who works hard and does well. They are folks who try to get ahead by pulling others down around them. They will be the ones who jump in with things you don't know to show you up on rounds or during your PBL presentations. They may volunteer you for undesirable tasks because " I already did one of those". The tools gunners use to make folks look worse then them are unlimited, and most obvious during the clinical years. In law school we had gunners who would tear out the pages of library reserve texts after doing a project so nobody else after them could complete it. You don't want to be a gunner. Now the terms gunner and slacker are tossed around in fun, much like commie and fascist used to be, not so much for the definitional reason but for ribbing purposes, and that's why there is so much confusion. But the short answer is that if you aren't taking overt actions to screw over others you aren't a gunner.

Holy ****.

Surprised no one's pulled this up yet. Number Three = GUNNER.

I am a combination of overly academic and one track mind!

I have just actively and perhaps consciously committed my first true "gunner" action. Not going to say what it was since the adviser could have told the other student...but I feel bad.

Gunners don't feel remorse... or actually anything at all - so you're probably still ok for now.

I feel little to no remorse because it's not my job, but this guy is kind of my friend...:\ whatever, if he did/does his research he'll be able to get it. Has nothing to do with his grades or really impacting his life in a huge fashion.

If you're going to be so vague why post at all. Where are you going with this?

so how do you deal with gunners who vandalise library books so screw you over?

Namerguy, no offense or anything, but your avatar creeps me out. Still, much respect.

I too am confused how this name gets slung around incorrectly so often.

A true gunner is as easy to spot as a blue dog. We have a candid case of a gunner in our classes. He keeps confusing himself as our friend, as he rips off our study materials and ruins our products in the orgo lab. He wears the same "(Insert top 10 med school) School of Medicine shirt four days a week, the very one he has no shot at even getting an interview at.

We even named our fantasy football league after him.

ima stick to these definitions

Good.

from the first post of this thread... if you actually searched gunner it says and i quote:

"In the United States a "gunner" is a term for a hyper competitive student. The term usually revolves around medical school or dental school. Gunners will do whatever it takes to be the best. This ranges from working very hard to sabotaging peers. The gunners are normally either concerned with getting into to a professional school or excelling in the professional school to continue on to a specialty."

working hard doesnt make you a gunner. shooting down your classmates does.

Agree. I still see a number of sdners call themselves gunners when they "destroyed" the curve in a class. If being a gunner means being good then there are a lot of gunners around you.

I've been reading my girlfriend's psychiatry books and I believe the term psychopath applies.

exactly what I was thinking when reading through this thread...
I recently heard that a greater percentage of successful businessmen (CEO's, etc) are psychopaths vs. the general population... I wonder if this could apply to those in high positions in medicine due to the competitive nature of this whole process...although it'll be pretty ironic considering the lack of empathy part.

I'm glad you have a psychiatrist for a girlfriend 🙂

I don't know about that. I wouldn't give a crap if you studied your life away, you'd just be that one kid with the book in the corner of the library.

Gunners have come to have their own identity because of this inexcusable behavior. The lenghts they go to to succeed become unethical.....and crazy. So it's a mixture of annoyance and pure fear.

I'd be happy with 80 bookworms vs. 1 gunner any day!

Funny side-note....Kid next to me in Bio Lecture is named Gunnar, and he's pretty much a Gunner. Hilarious...right?
