So as it says yes as hard as it is I did not match and I really do not know
i will ever ... future is so dark right now for me but I really like
orthopaedic and want to try as hard as i can to be able to match.

I am looking for research positions now but its really challenging even to find
even an ortho research positions ... ortho gate is not much helpful either … I
am really puzzled what to do.

Any advice will be appreciated 🙁

I feel your pain. I wanted to do ortho, but after not matching the first year I figured with my step 1 score I had an uphill battle. I was lucky enough to find a research position because I knew someone who needed help and was willing to pay. The next cycle I decided I would give it one more chance, but that I needed a backup. I thought long and hard about what else I might be happy doing. That is how I ended up matching in g surg.

The traditional advice is do research (I found some other research positions online, but I don't remember where I was looking), or do a prelim year. You need to figure out what aspect of your application is hindering you and try to work on that aspect (in my case step 1 score-took step 2 and did well, and gender-hard to fix that one). Only you can decide how long you are willing to continue with the uncertainty before accepting some kind of back up plan.

can u guys please provide ur step 1 scores and other stats. i feel like im in the same boat and want know of my chances as well.

as for the OP, sorry about the match. i heard prelim yr doesnt really increase the chance of getting matched again as much as research. thats jus what i heard so i thought id let u know. not sure how true that is.....(otherwise y would they have prelim in the first place)

Step 1 205 🙁
Step 2 240 🙂
First two years pass/fail only grades (although they had some way of figuring out who got AOA). This may have played a part in my step 1 score, although basic science has always been tougher for me (my in training scores can attest to this)
Second two mix of high pass and honors
Chromosomes=XX (and if you think this doesn't factor in to applying for ortho you are kidding yourself)

You're right that XX probably has some role, but I think your Step 1 score played a much larger role.

Unfortunately I don't really know what you can do. You can't undo your step 1 score, and this is used a preliminary cutoff for virtually every program. Yours likely falls below almost every program's cutoff, and thus you don't get a chance to wow them with Step 2, research, letters, personality, etc.

If it were me, I might consider another field of medicine.

Good luck in whatever path you choose. :luck:

Ended up doing general surgery. Decided I would take one more shot at it, but knew that my step 1 score was a potentially insurmountable obstacle. So after the first year I dual applied. Amazing that even though I only applied to 10 g surg programs (9 in california-but included some lesser known programs) I got plenty of interviews. I guess the step 1 score was not as big an issue for general surgery. Ended up at my first choice in the backup list. After 4 yrs I have to say I still think I would have been happier in ortho, but am enjoying where I am now.

Oh I didn't realize this had happened in the past. I am certainly glad to hear that everything worked out for you! And think, you're almost done!

Step1 - 234
Step2 - 239
AOA = No

I also did not match the first time out. I was lucky to scramble into a prelim surgery position at a hospital with a top ortho program. After working hard for the year and especially during my ortho rotation, I was able to get letter from many well known orthopods. These letters went a long way and I was able to match the second time. Keep working hard; I would suggest doing a prelim year at a program that is prelim friendly where you have a chance to match into an ortho spot. Good luck

Let's recap... you have a 205 Step 1, you failed Step 2 CS, and you failed your surgical shelf. Are you really surprised you didn't match ortho? You would have a hard time matching general surgery...

Yeah, the cards are stacked against you.

Did you match at the program where you did your prelim year?
