  • White, MI resident, disadvantaged SES
  • 3.7 cGPA, 3.6 sGPA
  • 520 MCAT
  • 2.5 years of research, 1 first author paper
  • 200 hours community service in a soup kitchen over 2 years
  • 250 hours of hospital volunteering (ED and PT mostly, lots of patient interaction) over 2 years
  • Shadowing PCP, 50 hours
  • Home caregiver for family member (10hr/wk)
  • Significant involvement in campus theater club, directing and producing mostly, some stage managing, and I was elected conflict-resolution chair

I know my application looks anemic, which stresses me out greatly.

First question then: where do you think you need serious improvement? I want a sense of your point of comparison.

Could you use the WAMC template and describe your activities with more detail?

I think I need more clinical and community service. I personally feel I’ve had enough exposure to get a sense that being a physician is what I want, but I’m worried numerically that won’t come across.

I couldn’t find the template exactly, but I’ll give more detail:
- Hospital volunteering: in the ED I mostly get to talk to patients and their families and I get them water and blankets. In PT I got to distract some of the patients during an exercise (while PTs were the main people there, doctors regularly came through). I got to talk with the patients and their families while they waited, and I got to play games with some of the kids while they waited.
- Soup kitchen: serving hot food to community members, and cooking food sometimes. I get to interact moderately with the people eating, usually just small talk at the window while they get their food.
- Theater club: directing, producing, stage managing plays. I put this under leadership, because each role required leading a team in a different way. I built my communication skills and had to learn time management skills to handle everything. I was then elected conflict-resolution chair, meaning if anyone had any trouble within their play, they talked to me and I in turn set up mediations or one-on-one conversations with the people involved. I also provided more serious support when one member really hurt another member.
- Research: so I actually get paid for this to some extent, which is why I dedicate so much time to it (~25 hours a week). Basic bench work.
- Home caregiver: for a close family member. I get paid to do the above-and-beyond the usual family member stuff, so bathing and dressing and sometimes bathroom help if it’s really bad. Other than that I also cook and clean for this family member.

How many more hours? I think the consensus here suggests you have at least attained minimum sufficient expectations with hours of shadowing and clinical exposure. To me your qualitative descriptions are equally as important. You have to discount your family caregiving from your shadowing/clinical experience hours because that's personal time, not professional development time. It is important to note if it is a significant portion of your time as if it were a part-time or full-time job by hours, especially if you are self-identifying as socioeconomically disadvantaged.

Have you attended any recruiting fairs or programs featuring any of the in-state Michigan schools? Have you networked with any current students attending medical school?

Everythings cookie-cutter (with the exception of the 1st author paper) but together I think you will have a very successful cycle if you apply with the right school list.

I suggest these schools with your stats:
U Michigan
Wayne State
Michigan State
Western Michigan
Oakland Beaumont
Toledo
Case Western
Cincinnati
Washington University
Pittsburgh
Rochester
Tufts
Boston University
Hofstra
Einstein
Mount Sinai
Jefferson
Duke
Miami
USF Morsani
Kaiser

I’m not including the caregiver role as clinical stuff, but it took about 15 hours from my week so I’m considering a part-time job. I qualify for FAP so hopefully it doesn’t come off as me just self-identifying.

You are by no means a weak candidate. Apply to 10 top 20s, ten midtiers, and your state schools. You’ve got a decent story with your caregiving and your economic background that might grant you a bit of leeway at top schools. You won’t need that for midtiers. Good luck.

I think quality > quantity. You seem to have had the opportunity for meaningful experiences with your roles. I think being a care giver of a family member would be particularly meaningful (just from an outside perspective). Congrats on first author!

You need to work on the self esteem.

Invest in MSAR, and target schools where your GPAs are >their 10th %ilez. for acceptees.
