Does anyone else have a major sense of anxiety about starting med school? I am moving several states away and will have no family or friends nearby to a town where I don't know anyone. Current relationship is likely to end due to distance (Colorado to Pennsylvania is REALLY far) and it seems that a lot of the people I met at interviews were much older and had families. As a 22 year old, I feel like I am having the same first-day-of-kindergarten jitters...how do you make friends in med school? Feeling silly.

Don't get me wrong-- I am so excited to begin. This is something I have wanted and have been working towards for years and am grateful to even have the opportunity.
 
Yep. I can't even feel good about it, as I'm afraid my relationship is going to end. Where are you going to live? Hopefully I find a room mate friend and we live near other students.
 
Don't worry about it. During orientation (or before, like on your class FB page) make sure you introduce yourself to people and be sincerely interested in finding out more about them. Don't be a douche. Boom just like that you'll have made new friends. It is nerve racking, but exciting. Good luck!
 
I wouldn't worry about it. A lot of your classmates will probably feel the same way. Don't feel discouraged, moving onward and upward is part of life.

Go check out the LECOM c/o 2018 facebook page. We have a lot of friendly people on there and some current students that are helpful.

Dude I'm in the exact same situation, the EXACT SAME. Im not 22 though, im 26. Stating to get nervous about August, but the journey should be fun.

I don't think I've had a chance to tell you congrats. I know you had some struggles getting to interviews which had to be a giant PITA. So congrats!
 
I think its completely normal to be nervous about starting something new. I've been having a lot of anxiety as well. I was lucky enough to be accepted in October, so the wait has been killing me. I think a lot of people have those thoughts of "what if I cant do it. Was me getting in a fluke. Am I as smart as everyone else. What if I fail out. What if I don't make friends."

These are all completely normal thoughts. I have them, everyone else has them to a certain extent. We are going to be ok. It will be tough, but we can do it.

You are smart enough to get in. Adcoms know what it takes to succeed in school. You weren't accepted on accident. Considering you are going to school in Erie, I think a majority of people are probably coming from out of state. This is a great chance for you to meet new friends, reinvent yourself, try new things. It's going to be awesome. Being a single doc will be awesome too ; )

Also about your relationship, I'm sorry to hear that. I know relationships can be tough. In my opinion it will be better to be single during the first part of medical school. Worry about you, and nobody else. Think of it as a blessing my friend.

Thanks! I really appreciate it. I did have a rough start to the interview season but it mostly worked out. I feel fortunate to have an acceptance and ready to get the ball rolling.

I was just there to visit a family member who is in lecom. Dude you have other to worry about. From what she told me... They are like a family there and it's so easy to make friends because the city is not that big. Make sure you get hosing near the college before it gets full. The apartments are right across from the school and full of lecom students.
 
This is very normal. All new endeavors are fraught with anxiety.

You're on the cusp of a major life transition, even without moving across the country. This is why there are all those goofy ceremonies people whine about (graduation, white coat, match, etc), to denote the import of your new life and to give you something to hold on to before you dive. People much older and younger than you have jitters. This is perfectly normal, and may actually also just be excitement slightly mislabeled. Best of luck and congratulations!
 
I am very afraid as well.... Every time if think about starting med school this coming June, I feel like I should just give up and find something else to do with my life or just continue with my nursing job even if I hate the job.

March is almost over. I still can't believe in 4 months medical school will be starting.

JUNE?!?!? We don't start until August 1st....is it just me or is that crazy early to start med school?

I will start orientation end of June and classes will start early July...

Yea, I'm definitely a little scared but I'm also excited. I'm mainly worried about moving so far away from my family and having to deal with really cold weather for the first time in my life.

Are you scared? Where will you be attending if you don't mind me asking?

Moving far away from family, significant others and friends does have its advantages though when you want to focus on a career/school, there are fewer distractions....... It seems overwhelming but the majority of everyone with you is in the same boat.......... But the dreaded Skype, internet video chat platforms, can be worse than having your loved ones in town if you let it be lol...... I still get chills down my spine when I hear the Skype ring tone going off to this day lol makes me want to .......

I'm not nervous at all -- really just excited to be starting med school. I've already done the big move/start a new chapter thing, so I'm looking forward to living somewhere new, getting an apartment, a car, etc... and finally being only four years away from doctorhood! 👍 Plus, my family is way closer to my med school than where I currently live.
