Well, I am not going to give you a lecture since possible losing your shot at med school should be lesson enough. One way to check if it is on your criminal record is to go to your local sheriff's office and ask them if it is on your record a few months after you pay your fine. I would wait a couple of months to make sure it has had time to be added to your record. I don't know if they will do this everywhere but they did at my local sheriff's dept and were quiet helpful. If they want tell you check with your state's bureau of investigation to see if they run background for people. In TN they charge $29 for this which is not much for peace of mind. Although it is probable more than the price of what you were stealing. Here is a link to the TBI background check if you live in TN. http://www.tbi.state.tn.us/tbibackgrounds/background_checks_main.htm

I have not read all of the posts so if someone else has mentioned this just disregard.

If you actually answer the questions such as "why walmart" or "why hair products", people will stop asking them and start giving you advice. If you leave them in the dark, all you're gonna get are more sarcastic remarks lol.

I will repeat
:troll:

the reason why i stole hair products was because i needed to get some for my dorm. My house was robbed recently and i didnt want to let my parents waste more money so i decided to steal them. And yes, they were bed head products, not cheap at all..

Step 1. Never say jack to the police when you are arrested. You sit tight, wait for them to throw you in the clank, then make bail.

Step 2. Get a good attorney. Do your research on this one. You will want the best you can find. Don't trust people who say "Oh this guy is really good." Word of mouth isn't the best when it comes to lawyers.

Step 3. Hope for a lenient judge when judgment is passed.

Step 4. Pay your exorbitant legal fees and court costs.

Step 5. Next time you are going to be an idiot, run the numbers. Which is cheaper? 50 dollars of hair products or 2k of legal fees. Good lawyers charge hundreds of dollars an hour . . .

Best of luck to you.

Here's what you should do: earn your own money. You're in college. Then, next time someone steals your shampoo, you don't have to break the law to combat your bed head. I'm usually not one who jumps to conclusions about people, but you must be of weak moral fiber if you think stealing isn't a big deal.

Hi, im a premed student and I got caught stealing hair products in walmart today and was said to be theft under 50 dollars. Will med schools see this in my background record? How badly will it affect my chances of getting into med school? Will theft under 50 dollars be seen as a felony or misdemeanor? sorry im not familiar with these terms. Also, this is the only bad thing ive done, except a few speeding tickets...im so mad at myself..

****ty situation... I think if people decide to steal then they dont have to be cheap on that, steal millions or more lol Jk

I dont really know... but if u got a felony because of it then its the end of ur dreams about med career...

Um....yeah...😕. You can spin a lot of things in an interview, but that...I don't know.

You better have some silky and luxurious hair during your interview to justify such drastic measures.

the court said the only way for med schools to know about it is to actually call the court located in my area. Anyone care to reply with actual helpful information please?

you want helpful information...DONT STEAL.

:wtf::wtf:+pity+

You just got robbed and have no money, and you still worry about your Bed Head needs?... WTF

He sounds like a d-bag, but he should also get help with that goiter you mentioned in your topic subject

That sucks... hopefully that shiz can be tossed or expunged somehow. I would never steal hair products from Wal-Mart... nothing high quality enough. Good luck OP.

The designer hair products at Wal-Mart or any non-salon store aren't guaranteed and are likely to be counterfeit or blackmarket BS. It says so on the back of the bottles, never buy expensive hair products at Wal-Mart or CVS or anything, go to your local salon.

Yes, it will show up on a background check. Did you got a ticket and not a date to appear in court? A <50$ SL charge is not a felony - which would screw you. But it is a misdemeanor offense on public record.

Your best bet may be to contact the county DA and carefully negotiate a deal in which this offense would be expunged from your record, i.e. never accessible by anyone.

Community service, fines, whatever you can offer... Do it.

WTF. Why? You want to be a doctor but you steal a few bottles from a store? What was your motivation? Do you feel a need to steal things? Do you feel like the laws that govern the rest of us don't apply to you? If you are willing to break this simple law of not stealing, what would you do with the power of a physician?

These are questions the DA or Assistant DA should pound you with.

can you update on your situation? on job apps, you will be faced with answering the question, have you ever been convicted of a crime? not, have you ever had a conviction expunged or dismissed. it is best to be honest and explain that you have never done anything like this before or since and it was a terrible mistake. you just did not have the money, you knew it was wrong and it was a terrible lapse of judgment that has been worrying you ever since.

haha, awesome. The OP created a new account to post on her thread.

For the person who said that it may get in under the radar and not show up in time in the records for a background check, that's not a good plan. Schools run another check before you go on rotations third year, and they're going to be very interested in that discrepancy.

start thinking of how you can positively spin this situation...here's some ideas:

1) you wanted to take the products so you could properly dispose of them in a manner that did not pollute the local ground water.
2) there's a poor little girl down the street with nappy hair who can't afford hair products and you got sooo excited about helping her out that you forgot to pay.
3) you wanted to take the products without paying in an attempt to perpetuate the company's negative cash flow because the company tests them on little baby seals. the baby seals always die. 🙁

just make sure you start your statement with "See, what had happened was..."
 yeah, that's hilarious... OP, get a lawyer

Alright, here is the deal.

-First, nobody here will be able to tell you for sure. So give up that notion right now.

-Second. Yes, it will show up. Even if it does not you will be asked a question that usually says something like, "have you aver been arrested or convicted of a crime.? You will need to answer yes. Lying is way worse than telling the truth. If they find out that you were lying it will be automatic dismissal.

Before I go on let me say that I am trying not to judge you. I am now 23, but when I was a teenager I got arrested a couple times for stupid misdemeanors. They were from when I was 14 to be exact. I have done a lot of research on this issue. I have since changed my ways, but that is another story altogether.

Back to you. You have two issues that you are gonna need to deal with. 1. Med school background check, 2. and license background check. I will repeat, lying is the thing you don't want to do.

People do get into med school and get licensed with arrests on their record. However, it usually depends on the crime, the amount of time since said crime, and what you have done to change. So the second works against you big time. I don't know what year you are but by the time you apply it will for sure be less than four years old. Not good.

Some states have specific crimes that are sure to make licensing very difficult. These crimes usually have to do with child abuse, violence, crimes against vulnerable people, and forgery.

Here are some for Washington State:

Custodial Assault
Assault 1st 2nd 3rd
Custodial Interference
Child Abuse
Violation of Child Abuse Restraining Order
Criminal Neglect
Imprisonment (as in hold someone against their will)
Murder
Forgery*
Promoting Prostitution
Harassing a Prostitution
Promoting Pornography to a Juvenile
Harassment of Juvenile Prostitute
Manslaughter
Neglect
Kidnapping
Child Buying or Selling
Incest
Extortion
Indecent Exposure
Child Abandonment
Malicious Harassment
Theft 1st 2nd and sometimes 3rd

Notice the crime in bold. It really depends on what degree of theft you are charged with. If it is 3rd degree, than you have a better chance. Now, none of these are an "automatic" dismissal. But they are crimes that they look out for and many hospitals will not allow people with these crimes to work for them.

Here's what I would do. Get an attorney. If it is your first offense, see if you can get what is called deferred prosecution, or see if you can do probation and get it expunged. Lastly, do whatever you can to rectify the situation, i.e, community service for theft victims etc.

Hopefully you can learn from this mistake and change your ways.

EDIT: Keep in mind that even if you get the charge expunged you will still need to answer "Yes" to any questions regarding it. Pay attention to how those kinds of questions are worded. Also, talk to the Board in your state. They are a good source for this kind of thing. But I will tell you now they will probably say something like, "we take every application on a case by case basis. As in you will not get a for sure answer. But they were able to steer me in the right direction.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice, so don't take it a such. This is just the opinion of someone who has researched the issue.

Haha this thread is the win. As the poster above said you better have some damn slick hair at your interview

Get a lawyer ASAP. Spend as much as you have to, and get it expunged. Have him beg the judge to do it in return for a million hours of community service. Whatever it takes.

Get it off your record.

I completely agree with you as well. Let me point out that I am strongly against stealing, as I'm sure is the case with most people. So, let me reword what I meant: Ultimately, I do not know this person and he or she may have other problems/motifs/peculiar situations that has lead him or her to do this. At least, I would like to think so and that he or she didn't just steal for the heck of it; cause then, you get into a whole other issue. It strikes me that this person has a conscience and regrets what he or she did, and therefore, it got me thinking if there was a legitimate reason involved. What I meant to say as well was that stealing does not necessarily condemn you as a bad person; doing something to purposely harm others, on the other hand, does. I'm just trying to understand this person and where they're coming from instead of just dismissing them as dumb.

she is not mad at herself for doing it. she is mad she got caught.

I believe OP's problem is that he/she didn't buy expensive hair products from the Wal-Mart. 😉

I did get it expunged. I never had to disclose it until probably when I apply for state licensure and also when i can finally afford those hair products!

have you returned to walmart since then?

Congratulations!

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't misdemeanors from a non-reporting court not show up on background checks? If that is the case then why expunge or even disclose?
