I am taking organic chemistry and got 74 on my test 🙁
it was the first test by the way.

I looked at other people's score and most of them that I saw were below 30.

I asked my professor and she said the mid C was 62.

I wonder if other organic chem classes in other university have the similar results.

Did you guys do well when u took this class in ur university? do u remember the average?

*I am sorry that this isn't DAT post.

first of all, don't ever compare yourself to others. we all know there will always be someone smarter than us. even if you see lower scores than what you got, it only sets you up to get lazy.

remember YOU decide what grades you get; not the curve, not the average. a 74 is not a bad score. it's definately something to build off of. set your goal higher for the next, and even higher for the following. you'll begin to familiarize yourself with the way your professors ask questions, as well as begin to pick out concepts and questions you think will be covered.

my only advice is to keep pluging away. like i said, dont get lost in averages and others' scores. as long as you have faith in yourself you will go a long, long way

Your lucky, my class (retook the class 2 times) the average for a C was around 50 or so in a class of 300-500 students. The majority of the students scored similarly to their age.

and do you think ur professor was unfair for making the test problems that he or she never taught? or is it because students were too lazy to study?

and did ur professor curve the test? if mid C was around 50 or so, then the curve must be really big.

I am actually hoping my class average C goes lower so i have better chance of getting A with 74 on my test 🙂

but since many ppl with scores of 20~30 didn't pick up their score sheet, i think they just dropped the course and changed major, thus only smart ppl are left and our mid C will go up next time 🙁

dude,

you seriously need to chill out. you did fine, and it was the first test. you were over ten points above the average and even if your class consisted of three exams, that's close to 40 points above the average (assuming at the very least you're consistent). that alone is a solid B. like i said, just keep at it. you'll study more efficiently as well as longer and harder.

at purdue, our organic prof spoke poor english and told us the first day he was not here to teach, he was here to do research. i won't begin to go into how rediculous his exams were. suprisingly enough, the averages remained about the same both semesters (anywhere from 55-65). i think professors like the averages to be around 60-65. but like i said earlier, it will do you no good to continuously stress out about the numbers and averages. i'm telling you this from experience. if you're this stressed about organic, you'll have an ulcer by next week!

I feel ya on this. I had my 1st organic test a couple weeks ago and got a 69. The average was a 54. I was very disappointed in myself b/c most of my points off were from making stupid mistakes. I've gotten over it... revamped...changed my study method and I'm looking forward to destroying the next exam
good luck
:luck:

what kind of mistakes did u make in ur 1st exam?

my stupid mistakes were...
1)c -ooh is carboxylic....🙁 it's not...i knew it but i still made a mistake
2)i forgot to put + formal charge when i drew resonance structure...errr

Something that i think was unfair were...
1) she drew Mg2+ and she wanted me to draw 2 CH3NH2 and how they would be oriented in the solvent shell. so i drew Ch3NH2 and since N has 2 electron dots, i circled them and drew arrow toword Mg2+ and she took off half points becuz i drew arrow...🙁 and she said my drawing had N in the middle, C is left of N, Each H at top and bottom of N and then her Mg2+ was below H so she thought i was connecting H to Mg2+ even though I drew freaking arrow .... 🙁

Most people lost whole points here because they didn't even draw arrow and she assumed that everyone in the class were dumb enough to connect H to Mg2+.....errrrr

2) she drew bunch of pictures and asked us which one has lowest boiling point. Everyone said she never taught us which would have lower boiling point. anyway the answer was the one with the most branch. I thought the one with OH will have the lowest boiling point because OH is basically alcohol and i remember that small amount of heat can cause alcohol to burn in chemistry lab but she said that's only one special alcohol that we use out of thousands of alcohol....errrr

anyway....let's do well on our second exam 🙂 and don't forget to study it for DAT 😀

Joon,

90% of students have a hard time with organic chem, and grades fluctuate at every school and within each school depending on professor. That's why we have a DAT to help even the playing field a little.

And fair and unfair tend to be more opinion than fact when it comes to college courses. The truth is, college ain't high school. Teachers can hold you accountable for anything they want. If your teacher said she was covering chapter 1-8 on the first test, but only had time to teach in class a few sections from each of those chapters, you still gotta learn the rest on your own and be able to do it.

Life is like that to. Could you imagine trying to argue with the Dental National Boards Examiners that something on their test wasn't covered at ____ dental school. Well, tough luck, learn it now and pass the boards or don't become a dentist.

My teacher did the same thing with the boiling point. I messed up a little on nomenclature, also ran out of time and didn't do 2 problems...opps. i work toooo slow 😡 Besides that, I don't remember...its behind me...I'm getting ready for test 2...sn1 and sn2, fischer projections😍 , and e1 and e2.
Fun stuf
