Hello everyone! So, I was looking through medical schools and seeing specific requirements for some of them (such as, which schools take calculus vs. not). While I was searching, a lot of medical schools say they don't accept prerequisites that were completed online. This is a bit of an issue, because in Summer 2015 I took Biology 1 online (class was hybrid, I went to the campus to do the lab) and got an A in it. Is there anyway to remediate this, or am I just limited to school options now? Thanks for any help!

I suppose you could retake the classes in person. I expect it wouldn't be a big deal, especially if you've taken higher level classes in person, but I'd focus on other schools.

I was thinking that, but I thought retakes were looked down upon?

Looking at the schools in Florida, I saw 4 that don't take online courses. I found 2 that do but said it is not recommended, and another said nothing about it.

Actually, rereading your initial post, it doesn't really sound like an "online class" to me. Does your transcript even indicate that it was online somehow?

Florida is my home state.

Yes, it has an O in the code that indicates it as an online class. I'm going to definitely email the colleges and see if they would look at a hybrid class differently.

Would there be any classes I could do to make this up? Could I take like a semester of A&P or Genetics and have that as my Biology prerequisite?

Those are questions you should ask the schools themselves. I'd probably try a phone call before an email.

Depends on the school (the med school, what they accept). Some schools are moving towards more "open" requirements and not hard and fast requiring Bio 1 and Bio 2, but some schools will still want to see those pre-reqs. Also depending on the undergrad school, some schools have policies against retaking a lower level course once you've passed an upper level. For example, at my university, say I got a C in Bio 1 and then took Bio 2 and got a B. I would not be allowed to retake Bio 1 since I already took Bio 2. Just check to see if your school has that rule.

The fact that it was a hybrid class might work in your favor, but some schools may still not allow it. Doesn't hurt to call and ask.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I will definitely give the schools a call and see what they say.

In general, I think that if your college counts it for credit, then med schools will also. But be sure to also double check this with the schools you want to apply to. This is currently peak application season, so you might be slow to hear back from them.

Yes......genetics or cell bio would work to replace. Are you in the app cycle now

I wouldn't trust an email agreement to look at a hybrid differently since nothing on the transcript indicates that it's not all online. The people looking at your transcript won't necessarily be aware of the hybrid status.

Did you take cell bio as a prereq for biochem...if so, ask if that can replace

I am not currently in the application cycle. I am trust trying to look toward the future and what I need to take in order to fix that part.

I transferred the credits from a CC to a 4 year. I just checked the transcript from the school I am currently at and it doesn't say anything about the class being an online (doesn't have an O next to it). Do you think it would be safe to use that transcript, since it doesn't indicate it is online? Or would they want both transcripts? Sorry, I am new to this.

I've spoken to enough schools to know this could be an issue for matriculation, but many will accept an upper level bio class. Have you taken cell bio? I would call and see if they would accept that and/or genetics in its place. Schools are able to look up certain courses and sections on a database to determine if the class was online or a hybrid, and Florida schools likely know regardless as they have so many students coming from in state schools. So call to be certain.

Would it matter that this CC was in IL? I used to live there but moved down to FL for college and my parents moved down as well. Since they are going to be residents, I would be one by the time I would apply. I will be sure to call them and see if they will take a substitute class for the Biology. Thanks again for all the help!

Most places I've looked at closely care about either the requirements, or if they're too old/online/whatever, multiple upper level science courses in the same discipline to make up for the lack of recent in class prereqs. I retook nothing even though some of my prereqs were AP, and some of those AP exams were taken >10 years ago. Hopefully, if you have recent upper level sciences, they won't care.

Yeah, I don't plan on applying until Summer 2020. I just wanted to be proactive about this so I could plan out my schedule for undergraduate so, when it comes time, I am not screwed and can only apply to a select few schools.

I'm not sure they would be as familiar with IL coursework, but they could call to find out. I think taking upper level classes is your best bet - it will help with the MCAT, shoe you can handle advanced coursework, and fulfill one year of biology

You will have to send transcripts from every college you attend. So AMCAS will see that CC transcript.

Look ahead at your course req'ts. Will you be taking Cell Bio as a prereq for biochem? If so, that should count, but ask.

I was planning on taking Cell Biology (or Molecular Biology), A+P 2 semesters, 2 semesters of biochemistry, and the other required prereqs. I don't need cell biology, just orgo and bio 1500.

Are you a bio major? If not, why the A&P?

Anyway...it looks like you have enough to compensate.

Psych major. A+P was my favorite class from HS and I wanted to try it at the university level. I plan on taking that my senior year (currently sophomore) and, if I don't have the time to do it, I can always change it to something else.
