Some time ago, I asked if programs that rank you will receive notification about where you ultimately matched. Everyone on this forum pooh-poohed me off the stage.

Turns out everyone was wrong.

My fear was that the place I did a one-month rotation would find out that not only did I not rank them first, but that I ended up at a totally different style of program in a totally different geographic region.

Everyone said, "No way, come on! The NRMP wouldn't tell every program where you wound up. That's ridicu-rous!"

Well, a few days ago I got a letter in the mail from a PD wishing me well at [the place where I matched]. How could he have known?

🙁

so big deal, dude. What matters is that you matched where you wanted to, right?

Who cares if they know where you matched? Unless you lied and said they were your #1, it shouldn't matter. I think its nice the PD sent a letter congratulating you. My home school recruited me pretty hard, and my advisor was disappointed that I didn't choose to stay where I am, but they were happy I ended up where I wanted to be...

Bottom line, not a big deal!

Well, there are several ways they could have found out. Unless your med school is living in the dark ages, they probably posted the results of their match someplace and the general public can see where the senior class is going. At the very least, PDs for the various specialties know where their own seniors are going. The PD at the other hospital could have simply inquired. Believe it or not, these guys talk to one another 🙂 I doubt the NRMP sold you out (and even if they did, so what?).

Please try and maintain an MPAA G-rating for SDN. Thank you for cooperating.

I don't know how the NRMP selling you out got you "licked." 🙂

Hornet871,

it could be worst...you could have ended up at a totally different style program in the same city/burrough as the program you rotated at, like me...although i haven`t received anything from that PD since a very interesting phone call i got prior to ROL deadline, I was planning on emailing him, telling him where I matched, and thanking him for his highest consideration....in the end, some specialties are very small and its important to keep your name clean. i think its a great thing that he emailed you, because it shows that he really wants the best for you. no one wants someone to be miserable in their program, if they`d much rather be somewhere else....that`s why its a match....

best of wishes in your residency...

The PD saw you didn't matched at his/hers program. So he/she guessed you did match some where else. I got something similar form a PD in a program I interviewd in. He sent an e-mail asking what made me (or any one else who had been interviewd, was ranked by them but didn't match there... I guess) to choose another program. A very polite e-mail.
Any way, you choose your program based on your own professional and geographical considerations, not according to who was nice to you during a rotation.

When it comes to free advice / opinions you get what you pay for. It is well known (or at least I thought it was) that the NRMP sends PDs a list of where everyone they ranked matched.

The programs recieve a summary of everyone on their ranklist they submit which show where & what the applicants matched in. I know this because I saw ours the other day

Really? Well that's crap. We applicants should also receive a list from the NRMP which shows who matched to what programs on our ROL.

Well, it's almost public knowledge (see the hissy fit in the adjacent thread). Most programs have a web site that lists their current residents.

After the match, the program gets a list of all the applicants who were ranked by them. This list then reveals whether the applicant matched, withdrew from the match, the specialty and program where they matched.
How do I know this?
The list was( and is ) posted prominently on a notice board at our program.

Hey, even if you told a PD that you really wanted to go to his/her program but later did not match there because you ranked it lower, who cares!

I mean, it's not like we are not allowed to change our minds!

The point is the NRMP hand-delivers a list of where each applicant on a program's rank list has matched, and I think that's unfair. Sure we applicants can go to every program and, if they've stepped into the 21st Century, they'll have a list of their residents, but it's not nearly as convenient as having something sent by the NRMP. 🙂

And anyway, for whatever reason, there are many, many programs that don't list their residents.

What exactly do you think the PD will do to you, Hornet 871, that makes you think you were*&^%ed? Sounds like he's happy for you, if he sent you a letter of congrats. If he was mad, he wouldn't have sent a congrats letter. Maybe I'm incredibly dense, but I don't see what the problem is.

I did an elective at a program and got LOR and was offered an interview. I canceled the interview after my schedule got full because from spending time at the program, I realized I wouldn't rank it very highly. That's a large part of the reason that you DO visiting electives...to check out a program more thoroughly.

My home program also recruited me pretty hard. They knew that I was looking mainly in a different geographic area for personal reasons and all the staff I run into now are very congratulaory to me, and are happy for me, even though they wanted me to stay.

Eh, so what?

It's not like they can see *where* I ranked them 😉

But, in reality, once you match, you're done with it. You're going to do only one residency. A program has to evaluate why they didn't get their top picks, possibly send out surveys, so they can be more competitive next year. The PD has to do the match over and over and over.

Plus, logistically, it's probably easier to get a list to the PDs than every single person who matched.

I just find it somewhat unfair that there's a lot of information about applicants floating in and out of Program Directors' offices, when we applicants are left in the dark until Match Day. For example, at the program where you matched, did you know ANYTHING about any of the residents (other than where they went to med school) before applying? How about before ranking? Likely nothing.

Yet prorgams have this type of information to fine tune how they rank applicants in future matches.

I happen to be very happy with my match, but a lot of my friends and neighbors might have benefitted from having more information about various programs and a) expanded their list of "Applied To" prorgams or b) concentrated their efforts on programs which have taken med students with similar applications in the past, instead of just focusing in on Number One, falsely thinking that a Second Look or an elective rotation would change their situation much.

Hornet,

You are a pathetic whiner. Didn't you use the screen name "davidgreen" or something similar a while back, and you got all huffy and whiny some time ago when you posted something that was probably inappropriate.

The subject of your post was really dumb, something that doesn't make a difference and that nobody but you cares about. You are on a largely ANONYMOUS internet bulletin board, and you are crying about the advice you are given.

My advice. Leave.

Bobo

I have deleted Hornet871's post because, though warned about the use of profanities and expletives in posting to SDN, he continued to use them a bit too liberally.

Hornet, my advice to you is to calm down and refrain from further using expletives in future postings.

Whaddaya gonna do, Mr. Wu? Kick me off the board? It ain't hard to come right back with a different screen name, ya know.

😀

If absolutely forced to, the moderators would have to take some sort of action. You should be advised that every post you make is attached to an IP address that is logged into our system. To make a long story short, we can potentially figure out exactly who you are.

I understand that you and others can get upset at times, but please refrain from the use of profanities and expletives, all of which are strictly inappropriate for SDN.

Thanks.

Hornet871 is truly a pathetic whiner (yes this is a flame). He is the former 'davidgreen' who caused quite a stir some time back by comparing a member (albeit the most irritating member in the history of SDN) to a loathsome individual. That thread can be found right here .

There's no need to belittle Mr. Wu. He has been a great source of information on the internet for years, Gonzaga-bashing aside.😀

You know, they're a university now. 🙂
