Hi guys, I have already finished Chem 1 and I believe I got an B or B+. But as it goes for Biology 100, I totally screwed up. I think I got a B - (minus). I hate the teacher. But this next semester, I am going full out and try my best to succeed as a Pre-med.

Because I screwed up on my first semester Biology class, Am I screwed as for the Adcomm?

Does anyone out there have any study tips for Biology?

Thanks a bunch🙄 😀

Sorry, don't take it personally, just had to do it.

No, one B- does not sink your chances at med school. However, you should shoot for higher grades in the future.

As for studying for Biology, it's just straight memorization. I would always make flashcards for it. Now even if I don't make flash cards I try to do things like self-quizzing so I can make sure I remember all the definitions and main-points for the terms.

Um, yes. This would have been my real answer had I been motivated to give one. 😀

My advice is to understand the material to the point where you can explain it to someone else that is unfamiliar with it. If you try to do this and get stuck on a certain part or are somewhat hazy while explaining, you'd better go back and review, because you don't know it well enough.

It is definitely a lot of memorization in the intro year class. If you don't like just memorizing out of the book I'd suggest writing out basic outlines of what you need to know based on the book and class notes. Another thing that can work well if you have an organized professor is to review the class notes after each class and recopy them if necessary to get them into your head. I am a Bio major and making simpler outlines of what I need to know has really helped me in upper level classes. Writing it down really works for memorizing. I found this helped in O-Chem as well. Good luck with it.

If you hate the teacher and its all their fault that you failed then I suggest forming a support group with Silver_eyes. She can tell you how everything is always someone else's fault.

Seriously though, I think that the flashcards are a great idea. I formed small groups of 3 or 4 people and we all grilled one another for hours on the material.

Hey! I agree with wolferman - gen bio at my school was graded on a curve and was pretty tough. I used to get into study groups the couple of days before an exam, we'd pitch in for pizza, and teach each other everything. one fun thing we found was that dry erase markers write on/erase from mirrors. Since every dorm room has a full length mirror, we'd sit around by it and draw out each topic. that way you can draw your visual/mind map as you study and you don't waste all that paper.

I agree that you should shoot for higher grades. Are you at least going to a competitve undergrad school? Getting a B at MIT, Harvard, CMU, Stanford, or the likes looks a lot better than getting a B at a local community college. Either way, though, you should take the advice of Cerberus and just keep reading and repeat the readings until you get it right.

Maybe think of it as a "story" and try to psyche yourself into thinking that it's really interesting (even if it's not to you). That may make it more interesting and easier to remember. 😉

No, don't go to any MIT or Cornell university. It's a Canadian University that isn't known as much.

I guess I will just read read and read some more. Stupid class and teacher. Tell me this, what upper level courses in Biology should I take in college to increase my Science GPA?

Like for example Microbiology, Parsitology, Histology?

Take histology. It'll help you when you take the med school version. Same could be said for micro, but if you are only choosing one, I'd go with histo.

Bio Grades ( We are on quarters)

B-, B, B-

Been accepted to 2 med schools, 6 interviews, just do your best in the other classses. Good luck

don't take upper level Bio courses to pad your GPA, take them to prepare for med school.. As a second year MD student, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with Dr. Mom on this one and say go with Microbiology. It's an important foundation for the year or 1/2 year course you will take in Pathology during med school, and will give you an edge over some classmates in remembering which organisms are Gram + and Gram - when you take Micro in med school. This is important in learning the mechanisms of all the different antibiotics and what organisms these drugs are effective against. Histology is also a very good suggestion, but in my experience involved a lot of memorization of images rather than concepts that are emphasized over and over again in clinical medicine and in second year. So that is why I think Micro might benefit you more (plus the labs are fun and at the college level is not all that difficult).

I agree that micro would be the better way to go. Getting a head start for med school would be well worth it.

You hate biology? Don't worry, no big deal. I heard bio isn't all that important in med school anyway.

as much as I hate to do this, I'm going to disagree with DrMom, too. Take microbiology. Micro rocks-- seriously, it does. You'll spend a lot of time in lab, and the lab generally smells funky, but it's worth it. Great class, and my friends in med school that took it with me in undergrad said that it helped tremendously. But don't think that taking upper level courses when you don't have a good grasp on the basic material is going to improve your GPA any, unless you learn some really good study habits really quickly.

And FYI, bio does not suck. Also FYI, a B- is not going to kill you. Don't repeat it, don't obsess about it, just move on.

Yeah, I hate bio too. Nearly failed out of Physiology. But some med schools didn't seem to care! 😀

General bio is stupid...bunch of introductory stuff that covers everything yet explains nothing

upper division bio is more interesting, and you don't have to memorize million of little bits of information
you can really dive in and understand it
same thing happened to me, but it turned out just fine

wow since u wrote the same stuff on the premstp thread, i'll post the same answer

yer an idiot and an anal premed

bad combo. hope yer horrible end of life grade was cuz u partied too much. was it worth it? tsk tsk......(is it worth it, lemme work it, put my thang down flip it and reverse it, itzyerfipnizwangnyaaa, izyerfipnizwangnyaaa if ya ghot a big rrrrrrrrr lemme searchit, find out how hard i gotta work it....)
