How many times have you heard people say " You want to be a dentist?!! I hate dentists" ? ...and what was your response.

"Well I hate patients."

Seriously, I ask them why they go if it's that bad. Then I remind them that dentistry is elective.

 are you serious?

I always say, "You don't even know me, how can you hate me?"

You can reply:

You may hate me know, but wait until you get your bill!

A few times. I'll usually smile like they made a joke, and suggest that next time they wait, until I've finished with the dozen different sharp instruments I'm about to put in their mouth, before telling me they hate me.

It tends to defuse the situation, since it's usually just their nerves talking, and more than one person has apologized when the appointment wasn't nearly as bad as they'd feared.

I hate dentists too.

At least they are asking you before you are a dentist.

When you become the dentist, you will hear it all day long.

I do what Rezdawg does. Say "I hate dentists too." And then proceed with the procedure.

That's smooth Bill, I like it.

Actually, I hate dentists. Well, I hate being the one in the chair.

That's one of the reasons why I want to be one, I think... For once I want to be in charge on the other side of the chair.

"I hate dentists too'...boy it works so well everytime...well almost everytime! I have been using that for years now. Hope it works for my advance placement clinical years!!!

I say, "Well, I guess that's unfortunate for you..."

I love dentists and dental procedures 😛. It's like being in a beauty saloon. 😀

I respond, "yeah so do I."

It's not a very fun place to be, but I will try to make you as comfortable as possible. =)

well, i tell them
"cause i wanna lie to people and make little kids cry."
it works everytime!!
people just brust out laughing.

it was really hard not to say this at my interview.

Usually whenever I get that response, I utilize my southern charm--I laugh, look at them sweetly, and then say "why that's exactly the kind of attitude I'm going to change around here." they just kind of look at me for a second blankly...very amusing to me at least since they don't know what to say back.

I like to say, amongnst others things....

"Well, if you actually did what I tell you to do, you wouldn't need us!"

or another one "me too, this is actually just therapy for me to get over the hate"

or my all time favorite, "we're still better liked than proctologists though!" 😀

I usually ask, " Why do you hate dentists? Have you had bad experiences with dental treatment in the past?" And believe me, the reply to that question can give you a really good insight on the patient's perception and what other dentists have done wrong with them which would make them come up with that remark.

In some instances, I wish I had the guts to say, "That's alright, I hate patients! " 😉

This is another can of worms I don't want to get into with patients. How many times have we heard BS like "My teeth were perfect until this dentist did a...." or "My last dentist messed up my mouth..."

That's just too much effort. I've tried asking "why are you afraid" and I get lame answers like "well, duh, everyone hates coming to the dentist."

Wow...aren't you the comedian...way to be original... 👍

Me think the dentist's reply "I hate dentists too" is not good enough. It makes the entire profession look bad from the outside. How about this:

Patient: "I hate dentischits !"
Me: "Congrats! You've just discovered the only dentist that you will actually get to looovve! By the end of this session you'll learn how to appreciate life more than before... Now open your mouth and shut up."

You see, we future dentists shall be talking all about love and life, not hatred.

Excellent reasoning my friend.

also medicine offers a lot of different specialties. in medicine you have 4 years to mature before you choose your career(internal medicine subspecialties are very different from surgical specialties). most dentists aren't even good at putting in cavities, because they went into dentistry for the financial reasons. and yeah, i would be hurt if someone i care about told me "i don't like your profession".

I wish I was better at putting in cavities. So I guess you don't have to speak Engrish to go to med school, huh?

Wow. Maybe I should be an M.D. I would hate to go to dental school for 4 years and not be good at "putting in cavities".

i bet i would still pwn you on the verbal section of mcat! though of course medicine is more than about engrish.

perhaps. what score do you think I would need to get on my mcat verbal section to get in dental school?

that's the problem. anyone will concede that dat is an embarassment as a gradschool entrace exam. if you had to get accepted into a medical school and then just select dentistry as your subspecialty(perhaps you separate from regular m.d. students after the first 2 years), then there would be no stigma attached to the profession. and of course then people who selected dentistry wouldn't do it solely for financial reasons.

Dentistry is a stigmatized profession because of the DAT?

Your comments pretty much show pure ignorance to the profession of dentistry and medicine.

Many of the things you have said about dentists equally apply to med doctors. There are plenty of med docs that only go into medicine for the money. Inversely, there are plenty of dentists that just want to help people and don't care about the money. And believe it or not, there are also people who want to help people and make good money. Nothing wrong w/ that, if you ask me, as long as you don't let money get in the way of people. There are plenty of stigmas associated w/ being a med doc. I will be respectful though and not list any. Additionally, I guarantee dentists come out of dental school knowing how to do a much more significant amount of their job already compared to med docs. Med docs aren't good at inserting central lines right out of med school or doing a lot of basic procedures. Some can't even take a descent BP. I guarantee though that out of dental school, a dentist knows how to do a filling.

Additionally the process for getting into med school is not that much different from the process of getting into dental school. They don't just let anyone into dental school. Perhaps you have dentistry mixed up w/ chiropractic school.

So please stop bashing on dentistry. I very much admire the profession of dentistry, and have a great respect for the profession of medicine, despite having no interest in going into medicine. I am offended by your nonsense.
