I really do. Especially this one girl who gets on my nerves. So she's taken anatomy 101 in college before. So what? It doesn't mean she's allowed to boss over everyone and tell them how to dissect while she doesn't want to get her precious hands dirty. Worse still, she's ALWAYS talking out of her *ss, meaning she's always labeling things wrong and acts like a know-it-all. I can't take it!!! She is such a big TOOL.
And my group spends way too much time on gossiping. Meaning I get to do all the work because by 3pm, I'm tired, I'm hungry, and I just need to see what I need to see and get OUT. I am tempted to skip lab altogther, and just come in later in the week with my anatomy tutor, so that all the dissection is done and I don't have to waste my time.
Anyone in a similar situation?

omigod,
I had this same chick iny my group-- just downright bossy, not that knowledgeable, and never wanted to touch anything.

We disbanded.

studying in groups is over-rated..

give me a book and 5 hrs...I'll learn everything I need to..

man I would show up late and leave early...
and if u do show up, look at other people's bodies, prosections, study Netter's and leave!!!!

The learning for anatomy happens when u go there after everything is dissected with some TAs or faculty or some people who know their stuff.

Get a new group before it's too late. Anatomy was hell for me because I had someone like that in my group...if you are telling yourself that it's going to get better, let me tell you, it's not! Get out of it asap. :luck:

Hell yeah, I had sex with that chick in your group and she was still talking about anatomy until I was like .... ho, shutup, its not that small, I just came out of the shower... And just like u said, she didnt touch anything either and that when I got pissed and stopped coming to lab.

get out before its too late!!!

How do I switch lab groups? If I request that, won't it look like I can't play nice with the other kids?
Or should I not even bother, and just stop going to dissection?

If you have that option why even go? i do not get caca out of dissection but at my school it is mandatory to go and nobody can leave early period...we are there until five. I have to first study on my own then go back into lab to actually understand what is going on. I hate the assumption that we all learn by doing it.... I need a lot of time, Rohen, then look at structures in the cadaver.

I had that same girl in my group - didn't know squat but bossy big-pants, let me tell you 🙄. Anyhoo, I tried to deal with it but it stunk bigtime and so finally after about the 9 millionth insult and frustration, I just asked one of the class instructors if I could switch groups and that was it.

I didn't even have to explain really, I mean, no offense to girls in general but sometimes girls in a group are the pitts. Like, it's 7th grade all over again, so I don't think you have to explain much. Just say that you are not learning anything in this group.

I think not everyone automatically gets along with everyone else, and if you've honestly tried to do your best, then just call it quits (if you can). I know come residencies, then we're stuck whoever we get, but until then ...

oh man, that really sucks. 🙁 so do you have any instructors that help groups out - we have some awesome profs who sometimes, heh, step in for us when we're "having trouble" (which is pretty often. we all pre-lab and whatnot but somehow it all goes out of the brain when you're in the lab). i agree that anatomy only really makes sense in the end when you have someone (knowledgeable) explain it to you during the dissection or you spend some good quality time with the cadaver after the dissection's over. removing skin fascia, fat, cleaning, etc. etc. doesn't really do anything for me in terms of learning. i don't think you should skip though; you might alienate your other lab group members (btw how do they feel about the problem lab group member?).

oh one more thing - rohen's color atlas is pretty awesome in terms of preparing/understanding lab material. if you read up on this ahead of time, it might help you to actually guide the dissection a bit more and take over from the bossy gal. good luck!

ok if u do end up going to lab.. show up late...

take a netters or a chung to lab and spend the whole time "quizzing" them while u are there... So u are actually learning soemthing and not just standing around.

As soon as u get bored with that... leave, walk around and see the other dissections, prosections, etc...

Offer to help, but usually MS1s think they are vascular surgeons and feel like that have to master anatomy so they will tell u that they will do it.. so if they do that, just go to other tanks and learn from them or leave early.

U are going to learn the most anatomy when u come back on the weekends or nights with ur smart friends and go over things, or when there are private or small group review sessions by your teacher or TA.

just get it over with, remember anatomy and your first semester sucks, second year is so much better.

holy $#it! that's f#*ing hilarious

Talk to others in the group. If they all seem annoyed with her, you can all try confronting her. Otherwise, make time to study with others in the group and just not invite her. You could switch groups, but you may end up with another person that you don't quite get along with.

As far as I know, you don't need special permission to bail, just find a good friend and ask them how their group dynamic is going, if it's good jump in. Alternatively, just wander around and when you get to a group that "fits", ask them if you can stay on-- most people will say yes if you tell them a) you have the group from hell or b) your cadaver sucks

... caveat: bail with caution, and try to go to a group that's not within direct view of your original table -- this can get awkward.

Amen....at least the book won't give you wrong information...

I had this lady (I call her lady because she is pushing forty) in my anatomy group last year. She is a former nurse and anytime we did any disection or disscussed any disease she would pipe in with "well I had tons of patient like this or we treated patients with this condition like this...". Every time she would open her mouth I would ask her if she liked wiping a$$es. She never got what I was saying and thought I was refering to the cadaver. To this day I call her a b*tch to her face and she thinks I'm being funny and flirtatious.

You sound like you need to chill out. Most people who irritate me I do my best to ignore rather than disrespect.

I love my lab group!! They are so awesome, I'm sorry you guys have bad partners.

I showed up very late to Anatomy lab, after studying for Histology for a good hour and a half, and the whole anterior abdomen was nicely dissected already. Plus, the professor was lingering with a few students so I got a one-on-one guide through the anterior abdomen. I learned all that stuff in 20 min.
The only thing is, my conscience is bugging me, telling me that I was being a bad sport by letting my group dissect, only to show at the very end...
Am I a bad person if I keep doing this???

Somehow I stumbled into this and it reminded me of anatomy (despite it being over for M1 now, but hopefully I'll get a better group for M2).

I had this girl in my group who loved to pimp people. She would cover up things and go "What does this do?" "What is this?" And the worse thing was I don't think she was even malicious on purpose...she just thought she was being super helpful. SOMETIMES she was, but I hated the way she made me feel bad if I was too tired the night before and didn't have time to read it over.

And my partner argh....she would never let me dissect and hog the entire thing. Yeah, like I wasn't as good as her or knew as much, but she would totally just do the whole thing. And then when I wasn't sure, she would go, "You, go do it" and order me around, telling me how to dissect. I never took anatomy so I'm a bit slower and I need time to think it through. But it's ilke, I kept getting bullied in my group.

Thank god that is over.

Make a deal with your group to share the responsibility of dissection. You dissect one day, they dissect the other days. You don't need to show up on those other days.

i couldnt agree more....thats the best to do in this situation.. and i also think that u shouldnt do all the work.. ms pressious gotta get dirty and actualy do something other than chit chatting and bossing every one around !!!😡

This is easy:

1. Let the gunner bitch do all the dirty work
2. Come back later when nobody's there and learn

In our group we had to fight over who had to be the one stuck being the reader. Everyone wanted to dissect. I would be glad if I was the one stuck dissecting, because that is how I learn the best.

some people just have an agenda. I liked gross lab.. we took our last practical last wednesday and I'm kinda bummed it's over. definitely a classic med school experience. I enjoyed dissecting stuff like the mediastinum, orbit, forearm, foot, etc.. not so much gluteal region or perineum but.. helps you learn. Definitely the most efficient way is to go in before exams when the bodies are laid out nicely and study the checklist, it's good to dissect too though. If that chick is being nuts there are subtle ways to let her know to take it down a notch.. our group was really chill, we worked hard to get done soon but definitely had a relaxed atmosphere.

This thread is from 2004. I'm guessing anatomy isn't a problem for the OP anymore...
