So I became interested in becoming a physical therapist because I saw how fun and rewarding it can be to help children with disabilities and being a PT opens a lot of doors for you HOWEVER I am pretty antisocial. To be quite honest, a lot of that has to do with how hideous I am. It's difficult to make friends when people are repulsed by your face and it's difficult for me to get along with people who are so happy go luck AKA fake. Anywho, I'm not sure what to do. One one hand I'm really interested in becoming a PT but don't know if I have the social skills to manipulate people ( manipulate them into helping me, making them think that I care about them, etc)

Any advice ?

I'm serious and don't mind working with kids that have disabilities, it really is rewarding but I do hate certain people. Guess I have to get better at hiding it and faking it.

Well, if you're faking it then it will show with clients who actually pay attention. Plus, you will end up giving ****ty service to those you can't stand and your career will suffer because of this. Either change your ways or choose another profession.

There are probably better options for you to work with kids with disabilities without having to have a doctorate. I would look into that if that’s truly your passion but would encourage you to stay away from PT for your own mental stability in the future.

Sounds to me like you really need to find a different path. You MUST like people and be willing to help them if you decide to go this route. Even if you specialize in pediatrics you would still need to communicate with their parents.

"making them think that I care about them"

Yikes. Just know that when helping children (especially ones with special needs) their parents are a very important part of the package which you'll have to deal with on a daily basis. There are ways to help children from behind a desk - I recommend that instead.

For the love of God, please go into a profession that doesn’t involve other people if you think it’s appropriate to manipulate others. I hope this post was just a bad reflection of who you are.

On a more productive note, I would start by working on yourself and finding ways to practice self love and improve on your self esteem. "Looks" only become a barrier when you make it so. It is critical to establish that sort of foundation before deciding what you want to do in life or else you won't be happy in any profession.

You should not go into any medical field. The one thing that is lacking now a days in medicine is humanism. You only worsen that problem.

Honestly, I am no physical therapist but I highly recommend you go try personal training. If you can deal with the patients in that setting, then there is hope for you. Personal training will really test your patience. But for real, don't get into physical therapy unless you have the drive and passion to help others out.

:/ I think some of you have made a great point. I would hate to work with people that are this judgemental and maybe I should focus on a career that requires my brain power rather than my social skills.

We have to address the root cause of Why do you "hate" people in the first place. I have a feeling On the other side of that wall of hate is an awesome physical therapist!

🙁 thank you for not being rude and yes I do feel that way about myself and the root cause of all my problems is my physical appearance. I don't know how I will ever "feel better" or look normal but my life would be so amazing and easy if I were normal.

wow there's too many bitter people in medicine, pick another career.
