I have a GPA around 3.0 and it is my senior year as a Biochemistry major (BS degree). I am planning on doing extremely well on my DAT because I have been studying all summer. However I am curious if I can even have a chance with such a low GPA. I received no financial assistance from my parents so I have been working 30-40 hours a week (pretty much full time ) all through school. Does this even matter? I have done lots of volunteering, have lab experience, am a member of lots of different clubs on campus including pre-dental association. I suppose I am just curious if I should prepare myself for rejection and if so what are my options?

It definitely matters.

Sounds like great extracurricular activities, on top of a job.

Your GPA is fine considering your circumstances. Now the only determining factor left is your DAT score, which can make you or break you at this point.

Here is another question for ya...what DAT scores would I need to even be considered? I am going to do my best either way however, I am mainly curious what would be required to compensate for my pitiful GPA

As DrKumar said, you'll be wanting to aim for a 20+ AA. I had a similar sGPA when applying, 3.01, and my 22AA really let me get my foot in the door, and having done that, I was able to prove myself with my other EC's, research, experience, everything else - and get accepted to a number of great schools. Again, like DrKumar was referring to, the high DAT won't seal the deal for you, but it will let you get in the door to show them all the other amazing things about yourself that don't fully reflect themselves in your GPA. Also, as Tedy said, the fact that you had to work to support yourself fully through college will make a difference to Adcoms.

Good luck, and keep up the hard work, you'll get there sooner or later!
