I'm just curious about something, if you're in a DO school can you match into Derm or Plastic Surgery? how do DO's match, do they use the same match system as MD students?!? or do they use their own?!? can they use the NRMP system?

I'm just curious....... any replies would be appreciated......

There's your replies. Now do a search and get some answers.

Ok- trusting you're not a troll and honestly looking for info...DOs can go through both the NRMP match and/or through the AOA match (the IRP?).
The AOA match happens a month earlier and is binding. >50% of dos currently go through the NRMP rather than get shut out by going to what might not be their 1st choice in the AOA match.

Now seriously, go to the osteo forum and do a search. There is a massive sticky that should tell you all you want to know and oh so much more!

Although you may hit more obstacles, anything is possible with DO degree. Really depends on how hard you work and do well on boards when you are still in med school.

Thanks for the responses and NO I am NOT a troll. As a Canadian, with no DO schools up north I am honestly curious. I don't understand why people are so 'sensitive' when someone asks a question!!

Anyhow, we have a prof at our med school who is a DO and is GREAT! I have nothing but respect for the profession. But was curious to how they match after med school. I am also curious if MD students can match through the AOA?!? ... and if getting a DO degree allows one to go through 2 systems for matching then why don't more people apply to DO schools? it would appear that they have a better chance of matching into top residencies?!? (ie: 2 systems vs. 1 for matching...).

Nope the osteopathic match is only open to DO students and physicians while the allopathic match is open to DOs and MDs.

Ahhh...thems a whole 'nother kettle of fish. Lots of threads on the "stigma" of being a DO, MDs being favored for allopathic residencies over DOs, etc. You can't automatically go through both matches - the osteo match is earlier. If you get a spot, you are withdrawn from the allopathic match.
