I've done a few hours of med student tutoring and few volunteer things here and there that aren't even "on the books" (documented in any way) -- in other words I just showed up for a few things when people asked for my help.

I really don't know what i would write in my EC section on the ERAS application other than "I would tutor medical students if they ever asked for help with any regularity" and "i like playing squash and basketball with my buddies"

I recognize that this is not good and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Everything seems boring as hell. Will I just have to bite the bullet and do research?

Actually, it's fine. Volunteer activities, president of x interest group, whatever, aren't really that necessary. More often than not interviewers asked me about things that were in my personal interest category. I think basketball and photography were on there, among other things. Doesn't matter what it is, but it gives you something to talk about.

Are your stats ridiculously amazing? In radiology strong stats can help PDs ignore the lack of ECs.

Well, I imagine most PDs would like to see SOMETHING outside of stats, unless of course they are pristine. Having hobbies is something, I guess. I would do research if you have nothing else to talk about where your time went outside of the classroom/hospital.

I think I left the EC section blank on my app. I did however fill out the hobbies and interests section with several genuine items. I was asked about them in almost every interview. They provide fodder for small talk. And to get to know who you are aside from stats. ECs don't seem as important as they were for college and med school apps. By this point people stop pretending they are meaningful. Research is another story.

Recently matched at a place low on my rank list. Make what you will of that.
