I suggest the following:Hey guys,
Title basically speaks for itself, I've come up with a preliminary list of where to apply that consists of all my state schools, TMDSAS, some other MD's. and a few DO's. In the end I'm looking to apply to about 30-35 schools including the TMDSAS and no more than 5 DO schools. I'd appreciate any wisdom that you guys may have. List is below.
Stats for reference:
FL resident
ORM (Asian)
Biomedical Sciences degree with university honors at a state school
Health science minor
cGPA: 3.84
sGPA: 3.85 (minimal upward trend)
MCAT: 515 (128/127/130/130)
Research: 400 hours over 8 months observing lots of things, understanding the process, and helping out with multiple projects at a lab centered around atherosclerosis but no concrete presentations or pubs to show for it.
Clinical Work: 2200 hours as an ED scribe over 2 years
Shadowing: Nothing explicitly but spent many hours of scribing actually observing on the wards with hospitalists at times, cardiologist codes, radiology and IR rooms. Saw an emergent OB C-section. The free clinic mentioned below was also on a primary care basis and as their scribe I was with them the entire time similar to ED scribing.
Non-clinical: 30 hours in freshman year teaching division 1 elementary school students “life values.” 200 hours teaching and tutoring kids at a facility for inpatient counseling for substance abuse. 500 hours since sophomore year of high school volunteering at a cultural organization to help promote my native culture.
Clinical volunteering: 50 hours at free primary care clinic for underserved communities doing scribing and other duties.
Leadership: 4 years as volunteer TA for human anatomy teaching several hours a week in a lab and library setting. Trainer position for scribing to help train new hires and guide other scribes to maintain overall clinical workflow; lasted for about 1.5 years.
Non-clinical Work: Online tutor for a variety of science-based topics through Varsity Tutors, LLC. Worked with students ranging from middle school to a graduate level. About 200 hours intermittently at this point.
LOR's: Head of the anatomy department/anatomy professor Physio/endocrinology professor Clinical psychology professor (non-science) 2 strong MD letters from doctors I scribed with for at least 150 hours each 1 strong DO letter from the same category as above
