I have a six-fingered left hand, and I'm wondering what my chances of getting into medical school next year are if I inform the admissions committees that I have a hand with six digits. Would the committee's rationale for rejecting me be that extra expenses would accrue on the school's budget for having to supply one of its med students with six-fingered hand gloves.

Or.. should I not mention my quirk and pleasantly surprise people?

I know you are joking but quirks like this could actually nicely lead into a really strong PS in terms of "why medicine?". You would have a great story as to how you became interested in genetics, working with folks with deformities etc. There have definitely been folks with missing digits (or parts of digits) who have become physicians, so I'm sure the glove issues have been dealt with before. You probably have to put two fingers into the same space.

You have six fingers on your left hand? Someone is looking for you.

Important factors such as these should be mentioned in every essay, displayed in the picture, and shown off at the interview. Don't forget to whip out your dick to show the admission's staff which way it bends on interview day.

Sheesh!

Hannibal Lecter had 6 fingers on his left hand and was bat**** crazy to boot and HE got into medical school, so overall I think your chances are pretty good.

Assuming you can continue to avoid Mr. Montoya.

lol...u people are angry. if u get rejected just get the digit removed...its not like it even does anything, just sits there and doesnt move, btw isnt it illegal to discriminate in dental school admissions?

it really all comes down to if you have full function of your extra finger

Somebody had to do it:

Allo, my name is Inigo Montoya. You kill my father. Prepare to die.

Alas, you are the third person to do it. There is nothing I can possibly say that is good enough to make up for being the fourth person.

This thread is all downhill from here 🙁

This is a great thread.

I vote to sticky this thread NOW.

Discuss.

If you manage to get into med school you probably have an advantage at applying for surgical residencies four years down the road, if you are left-handed that is. I mean come on.

just out of curiosity can you use that 6th finger?

You have approximately 10% greater odds of getting in. 😉

Let's see photo evidence!

You should apply to UCSF. That way you can finally finish off Adrian Monk. Don't tell the adcom that you mistakenly killed his wife Trudy all those years ago.

Uh guys.. hello? I am being serious about having six fingers on my left hand, and I'm trying to seek out some honest, serious advice which is non-sarcastic. I'm trying to figure out if letting the admissions committees know that I have a six-fingered hand will give me a leg-up (or should I say finger-up) over the other candidates. And yes, I am able to use the sixth finger very deftly.

Trust me! you will stand out if your reasons to become a doctor are sufficient, ECs/volunteering/research, unique experiences, personality/professionalism etc

Adcoms are all about diversity to add to a medical school student body! so if they can remember your six fingers, they can remember that you'll be a great person to have...so far youre a remarkable candidate...dont blow it with a bad personality!!!

i think right now you have bigger things to worry about, what with the bleach solution you accidentally drank in lab today. if you're still alive for the next app cycle, come back for more advice on this. otherwise, why should we expend effort to give you advice if you may not be able to use it?
