at an interview coming up. it is an hour long talk. besides refining the slides/talk, do any of you have any advice for me? also, do you guys think putting pictures of places i've traveled during transitions in my talk is appropriate? i wanted to give them another dimension of myself...

you have to give a presentation to the selection committee??

But, I do think the pictures would be a great idea, something nice to take their minds off the intensity of the experience - maybe some conversation opener type photos too -

Good luck! 🙂

I think the pictures sound great. Gives you personality and memorable. Not a million, but a few would be fun. 👍

Pictures of hot chicks would be even better.

Kary Mullis, who won the Nobel Prize for inventing PCR, does this. Not just regular hot chicks either. Naked ones.

But I suggest you hold off on the naked chicks until after you've got a Nobel of your own...

What kind of program are you applying for?

i think pictures are good, cartoons (far side) are even better...

I dont know about the cartoons. Presumably they are inviting you to talk b/c they are interested in your research or your presentation skills. Making too light of the whole situation might not come off well. Travel pictures might make more sense.

Just my two cents.

As far as advice... practice your talk. Not so much that it comes of scripted but enough so that if you get nervous or interrupted you wont be fumbling to get started again.

Oh yeah. Keep your slides simple. Too many words or tiny pictures and numbers are mind numbing. Keep the slides brief and to the point and expand in your talk.
