I am in a lab which is affiliated to my university through one Professor A, and through a hospital through Doctor B. Professor A has a huge lab with over 100 people, and I've only seen or spoken to him once over dinner. Doctor B I know a little better, he oversees the day to day things, attends lab meetings, etc., and only looks over about 15 people (normal lab size).

I work directly for a postdoc. Now, for a recommendation, which will be better, getting it from Professor A or Doctor B? Many of my other professors that I am getting recs from have said that I should definitely get a research rec. from Professor A because he is one of the most famous researchers at my top 10 school, just won the National Medal of Science, and is likely to win a Nobel Prize within the next 15 years. On the other hand, if med. schools see a rec signed by a postdoc and Professor A, won't they automatically know that Professor A didn't write it, and may not even know me? If Doctor B writes it instead (along with the postdoc), won't it seem more sincere?

Who should I ask? I have to decide soon since my postdoc is leaving in 2 months!

can't you ask them both to write you one? that way you have one that's more personal, and you still have Professor A's name attached to something.

Isn't that overkill? The postdoc will probably do most, if not all, of the writing since I don't know Professor A or Doctor B very well, and it seems silly to have two almost identical recs signed by two different people. Even if the rec. was rewritten, it would say the same stuff and show the same dimension of me.
