Ive run into this website, http://www.simplyhired.com/a/salary/search/q-Active+Optometrist/l-San+Antonio,+TX. which is completly contradicting everything ive heard and read about salary/income for optometrists. You can put in whatever city you want but I think the link I is preset to San Antonio but accordind to this site, the "average" active optometrists make 37K in san antonio and 40K in houston wtf😕

I know theres gotta be something wrong here but where the hell are they gettin these numbers from?!?!?!(unless were all being lied to and thats actually the true amount an optometrist makes, ouch)

look more carefully... those are army jobs

Simplyhired.com is NOT a good source for salary information. If you put stock into that site, then you might as well put stock into unicorns and pixie dust.

Yeah. It says that average is for all listings that say "active optometrist" which all happen to be military jobs. Even when you just search "optometrist" in that city all the jobs that come up are still army optometry.

ah, so you are going into optometry because you assume it pays well ?

Not exactly, but at the same time I assumed you would be making slightly more than a highschool teacher considering your level of education upon completion of the program.

Aha!

If you assume anything about any anything, then you will more than likely be greatly disappointed.

Some high-school teachers probably make more than some optometrists.

Sure, the optometrist with no social skills, professionalism and care I can see making less than a high school teacher because of their traits. But other than that, give me a break with that.

Do you want to add anything else to that list?

yes i do. Especially if he has rancid breath. That is all.

I can believe that. I know some optometrists (new grads i suppose) start at around 60-80 in various areas. Some teachers in my old high school (15+ years, tenured) make about 70-90. I think there is a cap (i forget the number) that a high school teacher can make though. But i doubt the ones that start make more than 50-60. Im from the east coast, so i dont know about other areas.

I know the principal of my old high school makes more than some doctors.

Was thinking the same thing.

Um...out for two years, make close to 100K.

I lost my job...

I have been waiting for a private practice opportunity to happen for the last two months and I have been very excited. A doc I know very well is the owner. She had hired me for excellent pay. This practice is opening from scratch in a new, fancy suburban area. However, due to multiple construction delays (ie. the contractors broke the custom CEILING--twice) and unexpected building expenses.....she can no longer afford to have an associate. I found out today.

I have been filling in for Lenscrafters in the meantime (which I actually quite enjoy) and I asked if I could come on full time if needed. They said no...they are not looking for coverage beyond fill in right now.

I feel so pathetic posting this--but I've actually been crying most of the day. I have been taking a paycut since the beginning of september in order to make this opportunity happen. I haven't been a doctor long enough to have a big savings account....so I am scared.

That was you, was it not?

It was...things have turned around a lot and it turned out the time I spent out of work wasn't as significant as I thought. Grateful for everyday with somewhere to go to work now.

Thanks for bringing that up, though. It wasn't painful enough the first time.🙄

That's good to hear. So are you working in private practice now?

gochi is such a douche bag that it boggles my mind👎

80% of the people on these boards are beyond douches, but you dont see my complaining.

Besides, i didnt mean to insult her. Was just using her experience as leverage. No offense intended.

You should remember one principle which will do you good if choose to practice it:

Don't talk, unless talked to.

good day.

you shouldn't insult her! she might have a boyfriend that's 10 feet tall and 400 pounds of muscle!

29 dollar eye exams?

WTF.

Why should i go through 8 years of schooling and accumulate 160k of debt during those 8 years just to give out 30 dollar eye exams?

Gochi, who's ASKING you to go through 8 years of schooling and accumulate 160K of debt? I don't hear anyone on these forums trying to recruit you. We get it - you are anti-optometry.

No, I am not anti-optometry.

gochi you have failed to answer my question. Who is asking YOU to go through 8 years of schooling and accumulate 160K of debt?

Who really cares about that? Apparently you do, Gochi, as you were the one who posed the question.

You still have not told us who is trying to recruit you into optometry. Why not??

Flawed logic.

Does it matter who's trying to recruit me into optometry?

Students should ask themselves why they are willing to concur 160k in debt after spending 8 years post-highschool, just to be making 60k post-taxes.

I challenge anyone to answer this question.

Can I answer? Pretty please?

Ok here's my answer. I make less than your figure pre-taxes 😱

I do it because I like it.

Money isn't everything.

Optometrists make more than many, many people. Even some who have more than 8 years education. And most ODs will end up higher than your figure above.

I answered your question to the best of my ability. Will you answer mine?

Why do you enjoy riling up pre-opt students so much?

get em xmattODx, Booyah lol

Because it's still a lot of money. Go on the pharmacy forums...they get paid about the same as optometrists...and there are a lot more of them.
