I don't know what to do. I thought I would at least wind up with a D, but it is a definite F. I was planning to retake it this summer, but I don't even know if I should keep going at this point.
I have been suffering from depression this semester and my counselor said once my medicine gets straightened out things will get better, but I feel so discouraged. My school doesn't replace grades, so the F is stuck there. I have a 2.2 for this semester and a 3.0 overall now.
How will I ever explain this to pharm schools? What do I do now?

I'm sorry for this terrible semester you had. In the future, be very careful that you start your courses strong. It is better to go into finals knowing how many points to get B or A then trying to at all cost work to earn a C in the end. It is a risk that must be assessed early on. In short, withdraw from the class if you feel that you have a higher probability of failing. Don't try to take unnecessary risk. You could not hope for a D because it is not passing.

Better luck next time! If you want to be a PharmD, you'll start taking it as seriously as pre-meds do! Please study hard and keep dreaming big!

Is there any way you could retake organic in the spring 07 or summer 07 at your college. Im not sure which schools you applied to, but talk to your pharmacy schools to check what specific deadlines they have for you to finish your prereqs. I know some schools like LECOM in Erie give you until the spring to finish any prereqs. Hopefully you'll have to summer 07 to take it again and aim for a better grade!🙂

Its a hard course, don't kick yourself over it. Just retake it and kick its butt--that's all you can do.

Serious depression is as good a reason as any for getting a bad grade. I'm sure there will be someone who will understand.

Best of luck.

Have you looked into dropping the class due to non-academic issues? If you have been diagnosed with clinical depression and are under care, that is considered a medical condition. I go to a big state school in TX, and even though it is a huge school, they are still very understanding of non-academic issues that affect your performance in your classes. My friend dealt with medical issues recently and her grades suffered severly, she made an appointment with the dean's counselor and took extensive medical documentation with her to support her condition. She was able to withdraw from her classes, which still shows up on her transcript as a W or Q and is not factored into her GPA, definetely better than a F. I seriously advise you to talk to your advisor or counselor ASAP and contact your physician for documentation. Everyone has issues that arise, after all it's life. It's not fair to let it affect your grades.

It doesn't matter if your friends school doesn't factor it into her GPA, you are required to by AMCAS and by the schools you apply to. Unless they do a retroactive withdrawal for the class it was pointless.

If you withdraw from a course, you never recieve a grade for it, therefore it will be reported as a Q or a W not as a letter grade. The class can be dropped either now or retroactively.

Did they remove the letter grades from her official transcripts and give her a W? If so, then she's got nothing to worry about. If the bad grades still show on the transcript and they're just not calculating it into her GPA at this point, AMCAS will still know and require her to report them and calculate them into her GPA.

She dropped her courses during the semester and received a Q in its place. For retroactive drops they remove the grade and replace it with a Q. I believe most schools give you one semester to complete a retroactive appeal, at least that is the time frame at my university. After the process is complete, either during the semester or afterwards, there is no record of the actual grade.

Gotcha...the way you presented your post I thought you were saying that she finished the course and simply took the bad grade out of her GPA calculation. <-- That happened to me.

I essentially allowed myself to fail a class because I was told you can retake a class and have it wiped off your transcript, so I figured I'd do that since i was having some problems in my life at the time and I didn't have time for school. Well, turns out my advice was "incomplete" and all they said they could do is remove the class from my GPA calculation and not from my transcript--needless to say, I was pissed.

I think PharmCAS calculates all grades regardless of grade forgiveness policy at the university/college right?

Haley - first things first....get yourself better! I won't say don't worry about the grade - that diminshes what you're dealing with.

But....you need to take some time to get medically well. You won't be able to make a good, rational & well-thought out decision when you're not well - either mentally or physically.

As for the future....many, many people overcome obstacles greater than yours. You may not be able to see it right now, but they do.

So...for right now - take the grade, take time to have the medication become effective, continue with therapy, enjoy your time off & your holiday, talk with your family & mostly - live!!!!

Life experiences can explain later so much what you've gone or are going thru. Take some time right now to live & think about what is really important & it really is you. (sounds corny, but its true!)

Best of luck!

Yes they do - positive. I got a D in calculus due to health reasons and took a "freshman forgiveness." I didn't put it on my PharmCAS classes, but noted the freshman forgiveness. They calculated it anyway 🙁

I met with the school about dropping the course, and I took a letter from my therapist..but I had already dropped a course last semester. LSU only allows 1 W per "tier" and I am still in the same tier so they won't let me drop anything. They said they weren't going to make any exceptions.
Thanks to all of you for the encouragement. I really want to be a pharmacist and so many people around me are telling me to give up. I am glad I found this forum.
I'm determined to make the rest of my semesters better.

I was wondering if you could just take Organic I in the spring and then take Organic II in the summer? I think that could work if you are applying to pharmacy school for Fall of 07. I wish you all of the best, you'll be able to make it just have faith in yourself.

I'm not applying for admission for next year. (thank goodness!) I'm in my sophomore year, working on a BS in biology.

Its still early then. Get good grades, no matter what, and you'll be fine. As a sophomore you've got a little time to show an upward trend 😉
