Came home at 2pm post call, inhaled a bag of McDonald's, and woke up at 9am this morning. Anyone else ever slept this long??? I'm surprised I don't have bilateral DVTs, attelectasis, and a sacral decub.

I have done this before. You wouldn't get sacral decubs no matter how long you slept because you have protective sensation and the ability to move to relieve pressure. How your bladder made it that long is another question.

My personal record is 26 hours
I came home and crashed around 9 am and didn't wake up til 11 am the next day. Saddest part was that it took me a while to realize when I woke up that it was a different day than when I fell asleep.

I'm green with envy.. in my life i never exceeded 10 hours and I average 5.5 even with no reason to wake up. 🙁

I wanna sleep that long. +pity+

I haven't slept even half that amount in one night in oh...3 years. 😀

I think I was sufficiently dehydrated from my call to give me ARF. I peed what resembled coffee the next day. +pity+

Call always leaves me REALLY dehydrated. Actually a couple of residents at my program are doing a pee study to measure urine specific gravity after a 10+ hr ED shift.

NO I'm more jealous of you, I wish I could be sleep deprived and just wake up automatically. Getting out of bed is near impossible for me under those circumstances.

Now falling asleep... that's where I have a huge problem.

so how is 26 hours of sleep any different from a coma. I don't like to sleep past 7 hours for fear I might pass in my sleep.

A couple of months ago, after being up for 40 hours, I slept 25 straight. I felt like rip van winkle when I woke up. I had almost grown a beard and had to pee like a racehorse.

I do this every post call day. Although I do get up one or two times to pee, then fall right back asleep. I hate call.

LOL! How frustrating is it to have to pee when you're that tired?? I actually debate myself about how long I can last just to avoid fully waking up...sad. 😛

I recently reevaluated my perceived need to get up and go to a separate room to urinate.

Now I just keep a milk jug by the bed. 😀

I suggest you review the diagnostic criteria for "coma".

My personal record is 21 hrs of uninterrupted sleep.....I am not sure how my bladder held out, but I do recall it took a damn long time for me to finishing pissing after I woke up.

One of my friends (a surgical resident) jokingly made the comment that he's debated whether it was worth it to get up, go piss and then get back in bed and fall back asleep......my question was "As opposed to what?".....his answer: "You know.....just pissing my pants."
*blank stare from me*
"Rob, you really need to get out more often."

Assuming you were decently well-hydrated before getting into be, does anything think that after 20 hours of uninterrupted sleep w/o urinating you could get a little transient hydroureter or a little bump in Cr?

Yes. I think that if a full bladder is not able to empty because of sphincter pressure, this could create an obstructive picture....

Experiment, anyone?

BTW, I once pulled a 9pm to 5:30pm (measly 20.5 hours), then yelled at my BF for calling me at what I thought was 5:30 AM! We argued for a while before I realized how wrong I was 😳

You all are so evil... In my surgery sub-I where I took call q2 (24 on - 24 off), I used to sleep 8-10 hours in the 24 hours that I was allowed to go home. Those were the days.. I used to sleep like a baby in those 8-10 hours.

I sweat like a pig when I sleep post-call. I never do that on a regular basis! I think my body is trying to rid itself of all the toxins built up in those 30+ hours awake.😴

to see that many folks out there are hating call as much as I do. I thought i was starting to loose it. we all heard how shetty this year would be , but living it an entirely different animal.

for me, there is comfort in that old saying; they can hurt you, but they can't stop the clock.

six more months of this crap, ohh boy 🙁 🙁 🙁 👎 👎

Condom cath

omg - this thread is great!!! at least i don't feel crazy for not being able to read post-call. i'm dead tired. my mom even got mad at me yesterday claiming that i was "too tired" adn that i probably wasn't eating enough?!

good lord.

no one knows what we go through but us and our sig o's, imo.

anyway, i went to bed for a two hour "nap" post call at 5pm. i woke up 'naturally' (no alarm) at 3:45am. HOW ANNOYING. i was totally bright-eyed. i watched VH1's 'best videos of 2006' for 1.5 hours, went back to bed, and awoke 'naturally' at 8:30am.

i have *NO* idea how i will sleep tonight or when i will wake up next (it's liek the twilight zone! lol...). good thing i have tomorrow off (and on call monday, of course! so the cycle can start all over again! 😎 )

Thus far my longest shift at work has put me at 34 hours (two different departments and no, I'm not a doc yet). Even after that I didn't sleep more than 8 hours.

I do recall a few years back when I slept for some 23 hours. I went to bed at 1am, got up to pee at what I thought was 6am (probably 6pm), and then went back to bed for another 6 hours. I was sooooo pissed when I realized that I slept thru an entire day off.

using a C-pap helps me get good quality sleep in the 7 hours I normally get now.

Lol, I've done that several times in high school. worked myself to death so to speak.

Yeah, I've done this post call as well. I think my record was only 17 hours though. 🙄

The difference between going without sleep on most other jobs and medical school is that on other jobs you don't have to write meticulous notes every half hour describing what you did.

Let me see....let me see....going back in time....back...back....

"Called to Platoon forward position at 0430 for a chief complaint of "Mortars need to be laid on new coordinates." Mortar section sleepy but OTW w/o complaints. tolerating diet of MREs. +Bowel sounds, +flatus but report constipation of five days duration.

Vitals: Deflection 2785 Elevation 89 Charge 2 gun one and gun one only one round HE.

PE: Section AAOx3 but radio operator still disoriented, probably congenital. Guns alligned and on correct elevation per assistant section leader who has checked their reciprocal lay. Loaders reflexes 5+ and equal. Gunners bent at waist on knees but OTW in NAD.

A/P: Three Gun Section, doing well. Laid on target "Kentucky"

1. Gun one will fire.
2. Section leader to adjust fire per third platoon forward observer.
3. Guns two and three will follow deflection and elevation and fire for effect when appropriate.
4. Discussed with Commanding Officer earlier today who agrees with my assessment and plan."

Hmmm, disorganized thinking...check!

lol joking!

yup, i've also managed to sleep that long. post call sleep is the BEST!!!

i'm sure many residents have done this but here's one i was told about a past resident -
she went home post call at 1pm and slept until 7pm...woke up thinking it was 7am the next day and was scared (it was winter time, so day and night is the same thing as we all know). she even went to the morning report room and ran into an on call resident who was like, wtf are you doing here at 8pm!?

omg, this almost happened to me a couple weeks ago. Woke up at 6 pm, thought it was 6 am, got up actually started getting ready for work, thinking why the heck am i still so tired? Then as I was about to eat "breakfast" flipped on the TV to catch a little morning news, and they're like "hope you're having a good evening!"

As for naps in the double digits of hours. . .i know the feeling my friends. . .i know the feeling well. . .

I just cannot see how you guys need so much sleep...

I just completed 48 hrs moonlighting over the New Years Eve weekend, with no sleep the entire weekend. Drove 2.5 hrs back home (after admittedly stopping and getting some fresh air) and then slept 3.5 hrs after eating breakfast.

Who needs 18.5 hrs post-call sleep?!! Wimps!!

Spoken like a true surgeon. Let's see how long you live...🙄

As much as I hate to admit it, I actually agree with Sensei... 😱

Thanks for the concern guys...but that shift was a once-in-a-blue-moon situation - I generally work pretty regular hours. Anyway,. I was just teasin' ya. I get plenty of rest otherwise and coupled with my exercise habit, lack of drinking or smoking and longevity genes, I'll be around for a couple more years at laest!

I'm going on back to back wards and was the unlucky one that was a single intern on newyear's eve, i'm so glad that i'm not the only one that's hating this year, who reads, i spend every minute of free time sleeping,

This is the best thread yet and now I guess I better offer to drive my kids... er uh Residents home post call.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I think my longest sleep was 36 hours as a PG1 or 2. However, the story my friends "laugh" at is how I hit a bank when I was post call at the end of PG1 year. That did $1200 worth of damage to my car. 🙁

Kim, the sad part is... I can easily do that.... scary.

Did ya at least crash into the ATM and get some money?

I wish I was a good sleeper, although residency did make me a better sleeper (it doesn't take as long to fall asleep anymore). Or maybe its just old age...

Maybe men just sleep better; perhaps females are biologically designed to be lighter sleepers so we can hear babies crying in the night, etc.?😕

Unfortunately, no. And it took a little while to be able to pay to repair my car too.

That's not quite what they mean when they advertise "drive thru" banking!

I know. Ugh. I have not had any accidents since that incident and another accident post call in my first year. :luck:

since you guys are veterans, could i ask for some advise regarding call? what is "the lesser of two evils"....12 weeks of night float or q4 all year long? (i know this is nothing for you guys but please, indulge me) working on rank list now and would love some feedback! thanks!😀

q4 all year would eventually just about destroy you! I would go with the 12 weeks night float, unless the rest of the year is call... I'm not even too fond of my 2 months straight q4 call! And I've only got a TOTAL of 5 months call.
