Sorry I know this is on different threads-but I could use some advice: I'm not a very competitive applicant and really want to match in IM in a few of the good programs closer to home. I already know how I will rank based on the strengths and proximity of the programs. I am really just trying to increase my chances of matching at one of my top programs. What do you guys think? When I asked they said that it's really just to help me but then conceded that it does help to illustrate my interest in the program. Thank you all!

i'm concerned that doing a second look at my number 1 will make it seem like i'm undecided, seeing as how it's supposed to be for the applicant and not the program, right?

You guys are overthinking this. If there is a program or two where you have a specific reason that you think you didn't get a "full experience" of the program on your interview day, or there are two programs who are literally neck-and-neck somewhere on your rank list, then do a second look. Otherwise, don't bother--when they say a second look can only move you down the list, I'm sure they actually meant it.

You've done everything you possibly can to maximize your chances. At a certain point you have to accept you can't do any more.
