This truly is a dumb question, but what is the difference between a phenyl and a benzyl group?

A phenyl group is a benzene ring that is directly attached to a carbone backbone; whereas, a benzyl group is a benzene ring that is attached to a carbone backbone via an intermediate -CH2-
