4th year, great so far, just got done with boards step II, feel confident about assessment and plan, afternoon dies down, resident says, 'Your patients are good for now, why dont you go and read, oh wait, youre a fourth year, take a nap or go watch some tv.' So, here I am, getting ready to doze off...dont want to read, this would oppose what I was told to do...somebody wake me up at graduation..

you must have messed your schedule up somehow or else you'd be home by now.
Has there been a noticable change in how you have been treated as a 4th year compared to the "paying your dues" period otherwise known as 3rd year?
It seems like it would be too short an amount of time for there to be a radical increase in respect offered by interns, residents, and physicians, but if there is, I am going to press the "fast-forward" button right now....

Oh, the change is certainly noticeable. It's less about respect, though. More like a touch of envy that our life is better than theirs, if only for a few more months. All the residents recall with fondness their own fourth year. Also, they have an entirely new batch of MS3 students to terrorize. We all just kind of float along relatively unnoticed.
It's kind of the honeymoon period of med school. Maybe they sweeten us up before they drop the hammer on me as in intern come July 01.
...and don't get me started on the 3+ months off from a 10 month calendar 😀
bump.
i just can't get over how wonderful this year is and how it's everything it's cracked up to be. absolutely amazing.

The other day, I went in for a shift. 45 seconds later, I was walking out, evaluation in hand.
Yeah, 4th year kicks ass.

Ahhh! 4th year...one of the best years of my life. Where you are funded to slack off like a paid vacation.
I must be the only one still getting worked. I just finished a month of ICU where I was working 6 days Qwk and now on I'm on EM where I get treated like an intern. Next month should be nice since I will be on rads.
Better to work now and learn than be clueless as an intern.
I've now done two sub-I's and have 3 more to go, plus a month of ER. I should be in decent shape come July. Having been treated like an intern most of 4th year, I am hoping the transition will be pretty smooth...
And I STILL get my 3 months off 😉
It's one thing to be comfortable with PEs, assessment, and plan, and another thing entirely to start becoming comfortable with actual clinical decision making.

I'm on rads right now. I was handed a bunch of CDs to go over and told to come in afternoons to go over studies. I walk into the reading room and its like "you're a 4th year, go home." I do have a quiz next friday though, so we'll see how that pans out. I only have one service month where I am actually expected to do anything. Next July is gonna suck when I actually have to stay for an entire day.
It's been pretty nice so far! My first two rotations were in my specialty - so I had a blast the entire time. Now, a wonderful clinical pharm course that meets for lecture 1-2 times per day, with some of the lectures at the local coffee shop! It's so great! I'll pay for it with the SICU in the spring, but I've got a lot of procrastinating to do before then!
