I want to go for an MD/Ph.D.

I'm a sophmore at a well known research school. My GPA is 3.65. I have 2 W's on my transcript and 1 NP in a 1-unit course which I never attended, but the NP was retroactively dropped.

My ec's: I have 2 abstracts, 1 paper under submission, interning at the NIH this summer, and am starting a shadowing program/ premed seminar at the hospital I work at (I'm on leadership), also a reviewer for the Undergrad Science Journal here, got a $1000 research scholarship this quarter from the university, am an undergraduate teaching assistant, and play a few instruments and run half marathons (not sure if that last two count ... but just so you get a bigger picture). I also do a bunch of church leadership and went on some medical missions trips, which inspired me to go into medicine.

What are my chances at the better MD/Ph.D programs? My ec's are fine, I guess they're just okay, but I'm just really worried about the 2W's and the NP grade and the GPA. Sigh...

Keep an upward trend in the GPA, keep up the research experience, and don't push yourself for so many EC's. Get a life. You wont have one for 7-9 years and possibly more after that.

I will also be apply MD/PhD and two of the professors I've assisted in research with all say its not getting in thats hard, its staying in and dedicated. Make sure its what you really want.

You've made a nice start with the ECs. Don't forget ongoing clinical experience and community service are needed, as well as leadership. You're doing well developing research credentials. With a good GPA and a great MCAT score, your chances will be good at the programs you're interested in.
