Does anyone know if an Online calculus-based physics course would be accepted as a pre-requisite for pharmacy school (specifically UCSF)?

I need to take the course this summer (to hold my spot on the waitlist) but the only school in my area which offers calc-based physics over the summer is charging me $3200!! I can't afford it and I really don't know what to do. My place on the waitlist is 25 and I don't know (if I could manage to pay for it)--if it would even be worth it when I could just wait til fall to take it at my community college (where it would cost me $500).

If I don't take this course over the summer I will be giving up my place on the waitlist. What should I do??? 🙁 😕

I believe a calculus-based physics course is accepted as a pre-req for UCSF. You should definitely check with the school to confirm that the course you have in mind will meet that requirement. Good luck with getting into the school! :luck:

Thanx for your reply imprecious---i meant is an Online course accepted (i edited the initial post)...

I already took general physics but they told me I need Calc-based 🙁

Hi,
I've taken pharmacy pre-reqs through Mountain State University (in West Virginia) by distance education and haven't had a problem with pharmacy schools accepting them. The university is accredited and allows you to sign up for classes anytime and gives you up to 4 months to complete them. Assignments are available online but you need to organize a proctor in your area for exams (a person who works at a library or university, etc). It costs $250 per credit hour. I know they have physics classes, not sure if they are calc-based though. You can go to www.mountainstate.edu and click on independent study. Good luck!

Hey,

Ask James if online courses meet the requirement. Find a place that offers it, and send him a course description. I think you have a pretty good waitlist number and I wouldn't want to give up my place if I were you. I think it's very likely that you'll be pulled off since I've seen many people (on this forum alone) turn down UCSF. Hope that helps-- and lucks to you! :luck:

how about asking someone who's opinion matters instead of a bunch of people that have yet to step a foot in the door to pharmacy school.

well considering you want people to think you are above all of those who have yet to start pharmacy school (by the way, remember that you were in that place in your life not too long ago), yours is the only post on this thread so far that has been nothing but useless!

MuraRX- Perhaps what Caverject meant to say was that your specific questions regarding which classes are accepted might be better directed to someone from the UCSF adcom.

It sounded very sarcastic and demeaning the way Caverject put it, as if to say that the opinions of the pre-pharm students are irrelevant.

Besides that, I did ask other people, but I happen to value the input from the people on SDN, being that we are going through similar things in life right now.

While a lot of my posts may seem sarcastic and demeaning, I mean everything I say. If you think I want y'all to look at me like I'm God, you are seriously mistaken. And you are right, I was in your place a few years ago. However, the questions asked here sometimes never even crossed my mine as a pre-pharm because they seem so common sense to me. For example, "hmmmm do I ship my car across the country to go to pharmacy school?" I mean come on. Most of you are adults and should be able to figure stuff out without the help of an online internet group.

Anyway... ndearwater hit it right on the head. You asked a complicated question about a UCSF admission policy to a bunch of people that do not work in the admissions department at UCSF. It would seem to me the people you need to contact would be UCSF, not SDN. Say for example, you get some erronous advice on SDN, what are you going to say, "Well [randomposter] said I can do it this way but I don't understand why I they denied my acceptance...."

I can feel where MuraRX is coming from. Even though we all know to contact the school for some of the questions about admissions, it is almost therapeutic to post these topics..even if it is just for encouraging thoughts from others who have experienced it and know how you feel. I know I am waiting to hear from a school, and looking/posting on here sometimes is the only thing to do to stop from obsessing on when you will hear back from them.

Once again, you are putting people down by saying that the questions people ask on here are common sense. Besides that, there ARE people on here who may have had a similar situation. Isn't that the point of this website? So that people going through the same process can support each other?

You may think I'm asking a complicated admissions question, but it's actually very simple. If there is someone who was admitted to UCSF with an online physics course on their record, then they would be able to provide relevant input, wouldn't they? You assume that I didn't contact the school, but I never said that.

There is nothing wrong with asking for advice. If you treat your patients who ask questions that may seem like 'common sense' to you the same way, you are not going to go very far as a pharmacist.

your welcome Mura. You are right on the money with this post

I would just ignore caverject. Most days he is grumpy and not very diplomatic. I would hate to be a patient asking for advice from him. He would most likely roll his eyes and ask me if I'm stupid. "Haven't you gone to pharmacy school? Of course, hydrocodone is the same thing as vicodin." Yeah right, I'm coming back to that pharmacy again.

 👍 I second you on that one! 👍
