I'm a P2. I definitely do not want to work retail when I graduate. Are there any pharmacist jobs that you might know of that are "off the wall" or "fun"? I would love to be an academia pharmacist at a pharmacy college but I have no idea on how to do that. I talked to my advisors and they weren't much help.
What's the weirdest pharmacy job that you've ever heard of? I'm a abnormal person so I would love doing abnormal jobs.
Thanks if you can answer any of my questions.
Academia has its share of problems... for me, the biggest ones were all the politics (I am no saint, but it was too much even for me) and the endless squabbles over every freaking dime. And, depending on the quality of the students, the teaching component could be depressing too.
Consulting is not something you can do fresh out of school. A friend of mine is working on her board certification so she can do consulting full-time. And besides building up knowledge base, you need to build up a professional network to find the opportunities. That takes time too.
Managed care can be incredibly boring (at least, to me it would be) if you are the entry-level DUR worker bee. It is fascinating when you get to the director/VP level and actually design drug benefit plans and other service programs, but again it takes time to get there.
I suppose my own career in business and competitive intelligence qualifies as one of the strangest things a pharmacist could end up doing.
🙂 But it is certainly not for everyone.
What exactly are you looking for in a job? What do you like doing? There are great many options out there, and they are very different. I have friends who love their jobs, but I would rather shoot myself than do what they do.
😀
