so i'm in a biiiiiiiit of a bad spot. i'm planning to apply this upcoming cycle, but i have stats that i am not the fondest of. like at all.

i took the mcat last year and got a 509, then retook and got a 506 😃 soooo yeah (it was the beast that was 1/16).

i alsooo failed a class freshman year (calc!) so my sGPA with that included is about a 3.05. my cGPA is a 3.58 with that grade included.

other info:

  • i went to a T20
  • california resident
  • URM (black female)
  • did an honors thesis in medical sociology for my major
  • hold a masters from aforementioned T20 (medical humanities)
  • volunteered at hospital mainly speaking spanish
  • e-board of major premed club, e-board of cultural club
  • shadowed a few specialties
  • i work as an optho tech, also working in a free clinic in an administrative role also working w/ patients directly at a free clinic.
  • i worked at a wet lab for all of my undergrad career, close to my PI, i have 2 clinical pubs (first author on both) and 1 poster, got a small grant for my research
  • worked as an advocate w/ ca congress + a few charities providing lifestyle info/talks/presentations to my local community (mostly spanish speaking) about health issues etc
  • certified in medical spanish, fluent in 3 languages
so i know thats a lot of info lmfao. i am proud of the work i did outside of my stats and i've always been a writer and plan to write a narrative around the way i wanna advocate for socially disadvantaged patients through medicine

HOWEVERR my grades suck and on my MCAT retake i did worse. i truly cannot take the MCAT again like that is not an option for me any longer.

i guess my question is... do i qualify for any MD schools? i will be applying broadly. very broadly. and will def apply to about 5 DO schools. is there any hope in applying to any med schools at all? or should i focus on DO from now on?

(edited to say i have a few physician connections at the few med schools i worked/volunteered/researched at who i've built a rapport with and whom have stated are willing to advocate for me but that can only go so far with my grades lmfao)

How many hours of in person physician shadowing do you have? How many hours do you have for each of your clinical activities of hospital volunteering, free clinic and optho tech ? How many hours of non clinical volunteering do you have?

Please organize your information according to the WAMC template.

Did you attend any academic enrichment programs? Are you part of a mentoring organization that supports aspiring Black physicians? Where did you grow up in California? What advice and support have you received from your prehealth advisors?
