Currently I am thinking of going pre-pharm. I still plan on finishing my undergrad and possibly completing my time in the sleep physiology department. I have a 3.3-3.4 gpa and two more years of coursework to complete. I am starting volunteer work this semester either at a people's clinic or at the childrens hospital. I am president of a pre-health group and am involved in other pre-health groups. There is also a strong chance I will participate in the Timmy Foundation next summer. I also do other activities non-health related such as mentoring at-risk young students.

My question for everyone reading this is, what are my chances of getting into pharmacy school? Is it necessary to do work in an actual pharmacy?

The reason for my worry is due to the statistics that are given on the school website about GPA being 3.7 and everything.

Thanks for your help!

You don't have much to worry about actually. As it stands, you have a solid GPA (whether that was your cumulative or science you posted) to obtain an interview at most schools. You've held leadership positions, always a plus, and you're interested in helping your community, whether it's health-related or not, another plus. You have 2 years of coursework to fulfill, you can definitely improve your GPA even further. Unless you're talking about pharmacy program that look strictly at GPA like USN or UCSD with a 3.7 or above, you have a definite chance at an interview.

Pharmacy experience is recommended, in my opinion, because you should see for yourself before you commit to pharmacy school whether you can picture yourself in this profession for the rest of your life. Just my thoughts, hope it helps.

How would I go about getting the experience? I've heard of people becoming pharmacy technicians but it seems like that would take more time. Would shadowing be more appropriate in my position or should I try for the technician position?

Thanks for your reply

Honestly, you could do both, volunteer at the hospital and get a tech license. I'm doing both and managing. Don't waste your money on taking a tech class, just sign up for the PTCB exam and study for it. In the long run, you can see which area of pharmacy you'd enjoy because the enviornment and job role is somewhat different.
