Hi there everyone. I want to tell you a little story. By the way, this is a great site with valuable information. Ok, so I just graduated an osteopathic school and applied for anesthesia. Unfortunately, I didn't match and was unsuccessful in the scramble as well. What went wrong? I applied to 35 places, received only one interview and basically I knew I was headed to the scramble. That whole period was the most stressful, depressing, and hopeless time of my life. I almost broke up with my girlfriend ( a classmate of mine whom matched in anesthesia). So here I am. I am doing an osteopathic internship currently looking for open spots in nyc, nj, connecticut area primarily. It's not easy; I've called up places and nothing yet.
I realize the reason I didn't match was my board scores and the fact that anesthesia is so damn competitive. I don't want to reveal the scores, but it was pretty bad. I rotated through BID, honored it, and got a good letter. I was an average student all the way. I was hoping for more luck, but I had none. If anyone can help or give advice, I'm all ears. What can I do now to increase my chances. I have this score tattooed on me and how do I get PD's to look beyond this. I applied only for anesthesia and am very committed to it. I didn't waver between professions and am not applying from another specialty into it. I really don't want to go through ERAS again and waste a year, but the odds of finding a spot for next year seem slim. If anyone has been through this, please let me read your experiences. I'm confused and worried as to what I can do to land a spot. If I don't match again, I really don't know what to do. I can't get myself to do internal medicine, the thought makes me quiver. I'm even debating leaving the field of medicine altogether. It's been very tough. I await your responses friends.

Well on the lighter side, you could get married to your girlfriend real quick like and have a couple of nipperoos, let her make the coin and you play all Daddy. ---Zippy

Bite the bullet and call all over the place.

Take USMLE if you havent already. Step I preferred. If that thought makes you all vagal and nauseated then shoot for the Step II. Can take it around the same time you take your COMLEX III.

Try and land an out anes rotation at a hospital with a residency which may consider someone in your position.

Shoot for osteo' programs as well.

Somewhere in the back of your noggin begin considering options in other fields in medicine. ER ain't so bad.

There may be an opening at Rush after having read this. 😀

During your internship use all your electives for anesthesia (anesthesia, PACU, pre-op assessment, etc. b/c I don't think you can do all rotations "anesthesia").

Try to do the electives at places with residencies, if you are nearby any (I assume you still have to take call).

Retake the USMLE and do well.

My website has the data for 2005's match. it's actually getting better for anesthesia this year: Only 6.0% of US Seniors who applied to one specialty (anesthesia) did not match. This was a big drop compared to last year.

For DO's, the unmatched rates are much higher.

i feel for ya bro. there were fewer open spots for the scramble this year.

i agree with the step 1/2 advice. if things don't work out in anesthesia, consider PMR. your DO training will be an advantage, and you can specialize in pain from PMR.
