Hi I'm a Canadian Student, who wants to apply to Medical Schools in the US. However the problem is my GPA is only 2.2 and I have not taken Organic Chemisty, or Biochemistry or Physics. I was wondering what schools do not require these courses and I might have a chance with with this low GPA?

Also are there any med schools in the USthat offer a post bachelorette program, so I could have a chance to make up for my poor gpa and any courses I havent taken? And allow me to write to the MCATS with them, because I havent written the MCATS yet either.

Could anyone advise me?

Thank you!

This is your main problem. There is no medical school that will accept you with this GPA. You must bring it up.

None, and No.

Right now you need to come up with a plan. Step 1, raise your GPA. Step 2, raise your GPA, step 3, raise your GPA.

Once your do this then you can entertain the idea of taking the MCAT and medical school.

organic chemistry and physics are required courses for all med schools MD and DO alike. They're pretty big parts of the MCAT too so I cant imagine you doing well on it w/o those classes. There are a lot of other specific classes that certain schools require while others don't--you should look into this for schools you are interested in. As an international, you've got a LOT of work ahead of you if you want to make this happen.

Im graduating this summer :|

I agree with the above poster. You need to get that gpa up. You can retake some of the classes that you did poorly in. When calculating your gpa, DO schools will replace your old grade with your new one.

Organic chem and physics are pre-reqs for all med schools. Also, some schools require biochem. And you should at least take o chem and physics before the mcat. But first things first...pull that gpa up. A lot of schools have a gpa cutoff of 2.7. Others have a cutoff of 3.0.

So all med schools in the US require those 2 courses?

If they do, is it possible for me to write the MCATS than apply to a SMP program and if i do well enough, than i can get in?

You must have Phys I and II, Bio. I and II, General Chem I and II, O-Chem I and II. It is recommend that you have genetics. Biochemistry is a pre-req at a good portion of medical schools; therefore, go ahead and take Biochem. I believe Calculus was even recommended. My best recommendation would be to retake all of your science courses that you scored below a B since ACCOMAS will replace the lower grade (not take an average of the two courses like AMCAS does). Possibly even do this with your math courses as well. You may have to do a post-bac. I wouldn't even take the MCAT unless you have completed the pre-reqs. You want to limit how many times you take the MCAT since the powers to be will see each time you have taken the MCAT and the score. Bring your GPA up to over a 3.0 and apply. If you don't get in, maybe a SMP will help. The average allopathic GPA is around a 3.7 I believe, and osteopathic is around a 3.5.

You must be realistic with a GPA of a 2.2. Even if you do bring your GPA well past 3.0, to off-set the low initial GPA, the rest of your application must be very strong and convincing.

Listen. At this point in time, you are jumping the gun to get around what just happened. You cannot. You have not taken organic chemistry or physics. This is 33% of the exam. If you do not know the basics you will sink yourself even deeper with a poor MCAT score.

Have a plan of action!!! Do no try this without a plan. Your first order of business is your poor GPA. With that GPA, it is highly unlikely that you will be accepted to an SMP either.

Take some time and figure things out. Your first order of business is to fix the GPA. If you are graduating this summer, then you may have to go back to school and redo some of the coursework and then go very, very well in Organic Chemistry and Physics. Only then, should you think about the MCAT. I am sorry to tell you this, but you are not looking to take the MCAT for at least 2-3 years.

You are now in a hole. It will take time to dig out of it. If you rush, that hole will just get deeper.

It's actually 4 courses, two semesters of each plus labs. I might recommend doing something like what I've done: I graduated with a nonscience degree and no premed requirements (you have some of them, but to raise your GPA you'll prob need to retake them anyway). I then set up my own version of a post-baccalaureate (not bachelorette...) premed program where I took all the necessary science courses to enter medical school and did well in them (you would need to do VERY well... my undergrad GPA was good). I took no additional courses, although you could in an effort to raise that 2.2. I then took a review course to study for the MCAT, and fate willing, I will perform well in 3 weeks.

I would like to attend a post bachelorette program!

That GPA is the problem. Take classes and do well in them, try to raise that GPA to at least 2.7, take additional classes if you can and get A's. I know you're graduating in the summer though.... and I don't know how graduation works... but does anyone know if he can simply not apply for graduation and take more classes for another semester or two?

Not to discourage you, but if worse comes to worse and you tried everything you can, and medicine is your absolute passion, I heard of a program called "Fresh Academic Start" where you can apply for it and all your school records and transcripts will be erased and you would need to stat over from the beginning from undergraduate. The thing is, you can't undo this. I'm not sure where you can do it, but I know in Texas, the the medical school application has this program. There's some criterias in order for qualification, however.

You honestly may want to look into some of the Caribbean schools at this point; I know we've tended to talk them down around here but schools like Ross and SGU really aren't all that bad. But even at places like those, I'm thinking you still need to have a fairly decent MCAT score and possibly even a GPA over 2.2.

BTW, you should also be aware that a fair few American DO schools do not take international students - and that DO practice rights in Canada are somewhat uneven and differ by province (if, of course, you wanted to go back home to practice).
