So assume I'm a undergraduate business major at a top 25 university, I have 1.5yrs left until I graduate with a BA in business.

However, I have about 2,500 or so hours of independent study into endocrinology in particular dealing with androgens and the effects of major sex hormones on mood, energy, recovery etc.

I'd like to go onto become an endo, but to be honest I really never thought about grad school until recently and I don't know where to start. I'd like some help figuring out

a) steps required to get a job as an endo
b) good schools
c) major and specialization choice for grad school

Issues: 3.38 undergrad GPA so far, could maybe bump up to 3.5 before graduation.

I come from a family with 4-5 generations of MD's, so I also would have help in studying the stuff.

tl;dr i know nothing about grad school and I'm about to graduate. help!

Do you want to become an endocrinologist, or simply do endocrinology research? The former definitely requires you to go to medical school before further specializing in endocrinology. The latter, you would probably need a strong research background in biomedical sciences or whatever.

You can reach either of those goals at any accredited institution, MD or DO.

As has been said THOUSANDS of times on this forum, you can major in whatever you want and still go into endocrinology. Would a major in the biological sciences help? Maybe a little. But not really enough to make a huge difference. So pick the major that you will do best in and carry on from there.

Also if you're 2.5 years into school, its a little late to be switching majors (especially as drastically as from business to something else).

I'd like to practice eventually rather than research. My father owns/manages 10+ hospitals in the pacific northwest and I think with his help I could start a private practice. I went into business because I knew I wanted to be my own boss, now its just deciding what business I want to run.

If that's your approach then honestly med school is probably not where you want to go. You are going to be someone's bitch for the better part of 7+ years during your training. Also, some specialties are more amenable to private practice than others. I don't pretend to know if endocrinology is or not, but that's something that you should look into.

Really, though, you should figure out if you want to practice medicine first. You should look at "being your own boss" as a potentially positive side effect of becoming a physician rather than as your primary objective.
