Hi, I'm an IMG 25/f and I recieved a score of 229/95 on step 1 🙁 I was aiming for about a 240. I finished basic sciences as rank 1 and won the basics science award. I have a decent CV and my father is a ortho surgeon in NY with decent connections. I have really had interest in Ortho or plastic ( esp plastic) all my life and am CRUSHED by my grade. Can anyone tell me if its still realistic to want to do plastic or ortho with this score?

As I'm sure you know already from the charting outcomes doc, you can definitely still match into ortho (just do a couple little research projects, maybe 6-8 wks worth). Plastics would be an uphill battle, but's it's still not out of the question. Sounds like you're AOA, so too bad you're not going into derm (I hear derm depts are ******ed for AOA).

Ok I'm going to sound really dumb now, but what's an AOA?

oh sorry, it's an honor society. Now that you mention it, I guess it wouldn't apply in your case. sorry for the confusion. however, being top of your class should show up in some part of your residency application package, and obviously it will be very impressive to any admissions committee.

AOA (alpha omega alpha) is the medical honor society in the US. I am pretty sure it is only in US schools.

You're not too far off from the average of ortho but you may be fighting an uphill battle coming from outside the country.
