I don't think taking fewer classes during your final semester will matter. I'm doing the same thing right now. I've also talked about doing this with my interviewers at some schools of the same caliber, and they thought it was a good idea. As long as you are doing something with your time (like research or getting a job) no one can hold it against you, especially this late in the game. Even if a school didn't love this decision, they aren't going to find out until after they accept you. No school would withdraw an acceptance for this.

^ agree. where you'd have trouble would be to come away from that term with <2.67 and/or fail to graduate for some reason.
