hello everyone, here is my dilemna. last year 2004 i was about a week away from submitting my app all the med schools in texas and some across the country. unfortunately i had some personal issues come up and i decided against doing so since there no way in heck i would get into med school giving in 50% effort. i decided to take a year off and work, shadow a DO, and volunteer in my community (I already work in a hospital setting as a medical technologist) then apply in 2006. problem is i dont think i need that much time to get things in order. turns out im ready now. my gpa is ok (3.2 overall, 3.4 in science) but my MCAT score sux (i beat the average for first time takers but not by much). i know im gonna have to and am ready to retake it in april of 2006 (i missed the dealine for aug 2005 and was definitely not prepared to take it anyway) and i know i have a better chance next year but i cant stop thinking of "what if". it is early in the app process and many people will not apply until they get their aug scores in what september? if anything timing is in my favor. i dont expect to get in but is it atleast worth a try? am i wasting my time and money? i know there is always next year but what if this could be the year?

It's hard to tell without knowing your MCAT score. It still is relatively early in the process. I would give a shot at some schools (at least the Texas ones).

I would always apply even if I knew I wasn't getting in because medical schools look at persistence and I think they do take into consideration how many times an applicant has applied to medical school. It's an unwritten rule but generall second and third time applicants have an easier time getting in because of the persistence they show in applying to school.

So assuming you don't get in this year, your chances of getting in next year will be even greater because you will be a second time applicant.

My MCAT scored was terrible, I mean really bad! I took it in April 2003 and this is my first year applying. I was too scared to take it again and I thought I would never get into school with scores as low as mine were! I am retaking it in August, but I have submitted my app to four schools. I have already gotten secondaries from 2 of them. I felt the same way you do, wasting money and time...but the longer I put it the more distant of a dream it became. So, I just bit the bullet and did it. if I get in this time, great! If not, at least i know what to expect for next year!

the best advice I could give is to "just do it". You don't know how many people I know who really could have gotten into school if they would have just applied.
