i usually dont ask for a lot of help here on preallo, mostly answering other people's questions or looking over personal statements and such...

but i wanted some feedback on a question i had that you have seen plenty of times before. i would listen to my own advice and answer my own questions, but my thoughts have deceived me recently.

with people that are familiar with me (mdapplicants profile 988 for the ones that don't for basics) is it extremely late to reapply right now and have a reasonable chance at being accepted somewhere? and if i reapply, do i need new LORs? or can i use the same ones from last year?

God...where am I gonna get the money for this...esp after last year...

but I appreciate any opinions on the matter. thank you.

I thought you already got accepted to UC Davis? 😕

jlee9531,
What happened, man? If you don't want to post the details, I understand, but I hope everything is OK.
You've been incredibly helpful to lots of people here. I wish I had some advice, but I am pretty new to first-time application process.
Good luck in whatever happens.

yeah man jlee... i hope everything is well!!!

maybe you can reapply and do amcas really quick, and some schools say that you dont need new LORs (upenn?)....

i hope everything is all right. 😳

Just to follow up on my really useful comment from before....

I'd say you should go for it. Whatever may have happened in California, your dream is obviously to be a doctor, and if you let this event keep you on the sidelines for another two years (a year off, then a year to reapply), it'll be that much harder to get back in the game. It's only early September, and if you don't have to go through the whole LOR process again, if you get your AMCAS in quickly you'll probably be fine.

Hope all's well man.

some of the schools say you need 1 new LOR in addition to the old ones, if you've applied there previously....a couple said you don't need new LORs - the only one I can think of right now that doesn't require a new LOR is Drexel, cause I just filled out their secondary.

thanks for all of the helpful advice you've given, and I hope everything works out for you🙂

your mdapp. says you were accepted at 3 schools last cycle... im confused 😕

hi jlee,

you've been of great help to me when i was confused about this entire application process

i hope everything works out well in the end, and sorry to here about what happened

why not just apply to only 8-10 schools this time?

take care

wat happend and y wanna reapply....and yes it wont be too late..just hurry...but WHY?

A little more on LORs (this is trickling out of my brain slowly)....

Earlier this year, I wasn't sure I'd be able to afford to start this fall, and was thinking I might need to reapply. I asked the premed advisor at my undergrad school how he handles this. He said that the process for reapplicants is very streamlined, i.e., unless things have seriously changed, they don't conduct another committee interview, and basically just send out the same letter packet that they did the previous year (with a slight update in the committee letter itself). He said it goes really quickly. Not sure how it's handled at your school, but hopefully it'll be similar if you do need to get another set of letters.

at least AMCAS saves my stuff from last year. so im sure i can finish AMCAS fairly quickly. Damn I'm going to be three months behind the game. I am so discouraged right now.

so i'm gonna put this up in reapplicants section too, but preallo commands the largest crowd so i thought i'd try it here too.

UPenn doesn't require new LORs? Too bad I can't even come close to applying there.

when i have the heart and time, i can PM the confused about the basics of what happened.

oh, jlee, I am so, so sorry. I don't even know you, but if something happened to me after I had been accepted I know I would have been heartbroken.

I hope things go 100% better for you this time.

and I really wouldn't mind hearing what happened, but I understand that it might be personal.

thank you from the bottom of my heart...and i hope the replies keep coming.

unfortunately i have to go to work right now (which i find very difficult in my current emotional condition), but ill get back to you guys later tonight.

Dude I think youve been a great help to alot of people here. Hope someone has some answers for you.

Is transfering to another school out of the picture. I think its easier to transfer then to get accepted.

Jlee! Even though I don't know you at all, I sort of feel like I do, because you are absolutely everywhere in the forums helping people out. You're like the nicest person on sdn.

I can't even fathom what happened but my heart goes out to you. 🙁

I think you could reapply pretty quickly. You said your AMCAS is saved. It seems like everyone is getting processed really fast, so it shouldn't be that much time til you're set. I assume you would write a new personal statement, explaining your need to reapply. If your school will send the same packet, or a slightly ammended one that won't take too long. And having done so many secondaries last year, I'm sure you have an excellent grip on what to write about for most.

To be a bit more cynical though, don't fall into a trap of having an identical application as last year. It seems like schools want to see differences from year to year so be cautious.

Since I have no idea what the reason for your reapplication is,it's hard to say what schools will think. I have to assume that whatever happened, schools are going to recognize the issue, and take that into account?

Jlee, I'm so sorry.

Hey JLee, I don't know what happened, but I'm really sorry.

Hey, Jlee. Its definitely not too late too apply. Get your stuff in and go for it. I don't know what happened with Davis, but I feel for ya and I'm rooting for you. Keep the faith, you'll get in!!!!

do you know if you can defer a year at Davis and start next year? im just grasping at straws....hope ppl in reapp can help you!

hey jlee, i am with everyone else, i really hope everything is okay for you. let me know if i can help you out...you have been a tremendous asset.

i agree with wends above, try to get a deferral for a year from davis and save yourself the hassle?
just make sure this is what u really want to do, because at interviews (if you decide to reapply), you will probably have to answer that question.

good luck!

J...

I don't even have the words to say how sorry I am... and how ridiculous it is on the part of Davis to have taken those actions. It's hard to be positive about this but I know you'll make it through, just like you have through everything else you have been dealt so far.

All my thoughts are with you... and I pray you do get the chance to follow your dream.

Oh no, what happened? Please private message me, I'm so sorry. I really want to go to Davis, it's only 2 hours from my house. I was kind of looking forward to seeing you there. 🙁

You gave me really good advice, I wish I could help you now.

You've done it once, and you can do it again. Start now and you can still beat the August MCAT crowd. Good luck!

sorry, not an option that is available.

hmm it seems like from the comments here:
i can still get in with the august mcat crowd
but need to change my app a bit
obtain another LOR for the schools that require a new one
and hope and pray haha.

thanks C~** 🙂

thanks to everyone else for their suggestions and help. ill see if i can get the AMCAS out by labor day...

just woke up and got more work....sigh.

Hi Jlee,

As a re-applicant myself, I can tell you that AMCAS will be a breeze this time. Make some changes to the ECs and PS, and they will turn it around quite quickly (esp. if you haven't taken any new courses). However, they need your transcripts again so send those ASAP.

I am really sorry for whatever happened. Just look on the bright side in that you know so much more this time around, in terms of what the schools are looking for, etc. Also, if you liked the other schools you got into (i.e. UVM), you should contact them saying that due to extenuating circumstances you will be reapplying, and in hindsight you still have a very sincere interest in their school. I was accepted this past cycle off a waitlist, but it was too late for me to move (husband, toddler, etc). They told me that if I reapplied I would have an excellent chance there, so I definitely applied again this year.

If it is not too personal or difficult, perhaps you could post a few details about what happened, so prevent some SDNer from entering your situation in the future.

Good luck :luck: and PM me if you have any questions about my experience.

🙂 Treg

Hey Jlee,

It's not too late to apply. I'm not even done with my secondaries yet, so you won't be in bad shape. With the determination you have already shown, you can make it! But that really sucks with Davis. I mean, you'd think they'll tell you this kinda stuff earlier, since u did get into two great schools also. So what happened? PM me if you want.

You are truly a great person and all the help you have given me has been invaluable. I know you will make a compassionate physician and it is seriously Davis' loss this time. Good luck with everything.

am so sure that you'll make it and in 10 years you'll look back and laugh at the ppl at davis for being fools! 👍

Hi Jlee,

I have no clue what happened, and sure hope there is a way out of it. Best wishes and if there is anything I can help with do let me know.

I don't think I am very familiar with the process, but would it be appropreate to contact the schls that you at least interviewed with last time and try to find out how they can work around your issue. I know you are short of time, but why not base your PS around the issue you are facing right now. I would assume (I know assumptions are not good) that the schls you applied to still have a copy of your last year's application, meaning they can read your wonderful PS from last year and add to it the new one.
Regarding LOR: Can you use a service like interfolio and have all of your previous LOR sent there and just distribute it. I know some schls require new LOR (we can make a list of those). Is possible at all to get a new one? (if not apply to schls that don't require a new one - again we can all make a list of the schls).

LOR req's by schl (schl, Y/N, if Y how many) - this is what I know
Albany N
Drexel N
Einstein - nothing stated for reappl LOR
Finch - nothing stated for reappl LOR
Loyola Y - 1
MSU N
Rush - I know they have a section if you applied previously, but I am not sure abt their req
SLU - doesn't say anything abt reappl LOR
UCSF - "If new LOR are available pls include them" (this is from the application, so it might be OK without any new LOR)

I will keep digging thru my 2ndaries and try to find more schls.

Pls guys if you have info on other schls just add it to the list. We have to make it quick so Jlee can add the schls on AMCAS.

Thanks for all your help Jlee and good luck, let us know how we can be of help.

Good luck to all

hey jlee
oh my god, i'm so sorry. i was looking forward to going to school with you too. i'm serious - that was one of the thoughts that ran through my mind as i was trying to process everything that was going on this afternoon. you've been such a warm and caring presence on these boards, and we all know you'll be a great doctor.

as far as reapplication goes, i'm probly not that much help since i only got partway through secondaries in this 2nd cycle. i can tell you that amcas was much easier, and it only took 10 business days to process (my transcripts were already in). i found it very hard to substantially change my ps, but the consensus seems to be that your ps should reflect your growth over the past yr and how your experiences have impacted your motivation to become a doctor. for LORs, you should probly try to get a new one from work, and maybe an updated one from any volunteering that you continued? (i think you mentioned once that you still visited the kids up in berkeley). i'm sure if you explain the situation, they'll get out the letters as soon as possible.

as far as timing goes, it's not the best time, but it's not too late. last yr i submitted around this time. but the biggest delay in my app were my LORs. i wasn't complete at several schools until december. if you submit this weekend, you'll be processed by Sept 20? i'm sure you know to send out secondaries/letters as soon as possible, and if you stay on top of the game (unlike me) you'll be complete at many schools by end of Oct.

good luck~ we're all rooting for you

As far as I've seen with schools requiring new LORs for reapps:
Albany - is required
Drexel - not required but they accept new ones if you send them
Einstein - nothing stated for reappl LOR
Finch - nothing stated for reappl LOR
Loyola Y - 1
MSU - N
Rush - I know they have a section if you applied previously, but I am not sure aboutt their req
SLU - doesn't say anything aboutt reappl LOR
UCSF - "If new LOR are available pls include them" (this is from the application, so it might be OK without any new LOR)
UVM - requires a new LOR

Come on guys (and girls) post your info about the apps so JLee has it alittle easier, we owe it to him!

All the best in your situation my friend.
We're here to help if you need it!

jlee, I'm relatively new to this forum (earlier this year), so I haven't been the direct recipient of your posts, but you sound like a wonderful person. One thing to think about that I haven't heard bandied about yet (and it's a biggie):

You might have to explain what happened at UC Davis on your secondaries. Your AMCAS should be cake and they seem to be processing VERY quickly these days, and it sounds like your secondary essays shouldn't be TOO hard, except for that one fact of what happened at UC Davis. [side note - UC Davis - WOW - you must be AWESOME!] The way you write about what happened I think would be VERY key, and you may want some help making it sound just right. Sounds like lots of folks here would be willing to help you out with that.

I haven't finished my secondaries yet either, but I'm still waiting for my August MCAT scores. Most of the med schools have asked for the secondary already, tho.. and I've got a friend whose AMCAS hasn't even been verified yet (problem with transcripts) and he got all but one of his secondaries requested already.

Good luck - just remember, sometimes things happen for a reason. Perhaps there's just another place you were supposed to be 🙂 .

You?re in my thoughts and prayers jlee.
I would try again, yes its daunting and easier said than done ?but someone with the type of comradeship and genuine concern for other -- which you have shown here --deserves to be in the medical profession. The fact that you have supported and pushed so many of us towards our dreams, even though you have no personal attachment to us , is impressive. I think I speak for the majority of sdn members when I reiterate how much you have helped, and how deeply your spirit in this process has aided us in coping with the application process.
Please if there is anything I could do let me know.
(you can pm and u have my email and aol sn .. anytime!)

Come on guys/girls help out with the list. If you still have 2ndaries in hand just check and see if there is anything abt reappl. Jlee needs this asap, this is the least we can do for him.

Jlee, is there anything esle we can help with?

good luck to all

Einstein - nothing stated for reappl LOR
Finch - nothing stated for reappl LOR
George Washington - doesn't specify
Loyola Y - 1
MSU - N
NYMC - "Re-applicants must re-submit Letters of Evaluation" but nothing about extra letters
Rush - I know they have a section if you applied previously, but I am not sure aboutt their req
SLU - doesn't say anything aboutt reappl LOR
Tulane - doesn't seem to say anything about reapplicants
UCI - doesn't seem to say anything
UCLA - 2 "Reapplication: Students who were not successful in gaining admission to medical school may submit a second application. We would prefer that these individuals remain in an academic environment, either in a graduate degree program or doing remedial work in areas of weakness. The applicant should forward two letters of recommendation from associates during this period of time."
UCSF - "If new LOR are available pls include them" (this is from the application, so it might be OK without any new LOR)
UVM - requires a new LOR

Here is my list of secondaries received so far and whether there is a spot in the secondary for requiring anything for re-applicants (sorry my list is pitiful so far - waiting for August MCAT scores):

Med Coll Wisc: nope
UColorado: nope
Rosalind Franklin: nope
Creighton: Asks if you applied to Creighton before. Also states "If you have previously matriculated at another School of Medicine, please note that it is the policy of the Committee on Admissions for the Creighton University School of Medicine to consider such applications only when accompanied by a letter of eligibility to re-enroll at your previous School of Medicine."
Wright: nope
OSU: nothing on their invite (haven't actually done the secondary yet - just got the email two days ago)
Pritzker: nope
Albany: already answered by someone who filled out their secondary already 🙂
Vermont: Needs "at least one" new LOR if you applied last year.

In addition, most applications have a box of "if you have had any institutional action" which led to you being dismissed/withdrawn/etc. Wish I could be more helpful 😳

yeah i've been thinking about this as well. thanks for the reminder.

also thanks to everyone else, thanks for the setting up this LOR list.

lots of people dog on preallo, but we still have good people here. if i could only show how appreciative i am to you guys...i would feel a lot better...but just take my word for it. i feel stronger now and the drive to reapply again is coming back...

Jlee,

Is what happened to you at all common? Is it something that the rest of us should be wary of falling into, or is it very specific to you?

I understand not wanting to go into specifics publicly, but if you could describe in general terms, I know I for one would be very curious about what could possibly have happened. (Otherwise I'd like you to PM me about it, but I assume you're going to be way too busy to respond.)

:luck: Here's some luck for the next go-around. If you did it once, you can do it again. Better than eva!

EVMS website says:
"Previous applications are retained for only one year. Letters of recommendation can be merged with the current application only with a written request from the applicant. In addition, one current letter of recommendation must be submitted."

I guess this is only helpful if you applied to that specific school for this year. Can you list the schools you applied to so we don't give you info you can't use?
I'm sorry about whatever happened at UC Davis. I know it's hard right now, but try to stay positive. Good luck with your application this time around. You should be okay if you get your app in before the august MCATers.

Oh no! I have no idea on the specifics of what happened to you, and I don't know you personally, but I'm really sorry and astounded to learn tangentially about what must have been a terrible thing to go through. That's just awful... Good luck with your applications this cycle. We'll be rooting for you!

jlee, I'm confused; i have no idea what happened, but i'm so sorry from the bottom of my heart.. In addition i have no clue how to access your mdapplicants account by the number...anyone care to inform a total idiot how to do it?

You have been so helpful to me and everyone else here. Maybe if i knew what happened I could better try to answer any of your questions. If you don't mind sharing, please PM me. But in any case it's defintely not too late. Send stuff in ASAP snd best of luck. You're in my thoughts and prayers.

Just go to any person's profile, and replace the number at the end (in the address bar) with the profile number. 👍

thanks, and even stupider question, how do you get to any profile? I can only get to the home page and then the search is for particular demographics...how do you enter any number to view a profile?

Go to the homepage, and type in numbers for the GPA and the MCAT, and then do a search based on the school you are interested in (you can see who was accepted or interviewed for a particular school). 🙂

awesome, thanks!! you'd think there should be an easier way; like having a place to enter a number right on the page so you can look at any profile right from the home page; oh well

i wouldn't be against it haha. j/k.

thanks you guys for all the info....
and since im not too much of a fan of starting new threads I have something else I wanted to get out here...
If any of you guys or if you know someone who will be attending Davis for any reason and needs a place to live...I have a place. For the obvious reasons I had to pull out of the lease and left my roommate hanging...he's a real good guy too and I feel bad about it so I'm helping to find someone take over my share of the apt...I figure I might as well post on SDN and Craig's List.
Here are some specs...

I have a room available in a 2 br/2 ba apt at Aspen Village. The bedroom is about 140 square feet and the entire apt is 1015 square feet. Rent is $590/month and the one year lease begins Sept 15th. This complex is beyond nice, some amenities include:
-vaulted ceilings
-balconies
-pond and garden views
-near bus lines and bike paths (about 3 miles from school)
-pool/jacuzzi
-workout room
-study room w/ computers
-ample parking
-located in West Davis, near homes so it is very serene and quiet
-place looks brand new!!!

Please contact me via PM or email if you or someone you know might be interested.

I don't know you but I've read enough of your posts to know you're a good fellow. I wish you the best in getting re-admitted somewhere.

Jlee-

I'm a longtime lurker- first time poster on a thread created by you or discussion involving you. So I guess I from afar have respected your comments and input on others' situations.

Just wanted to wish my well-wishes and if you could, PM me the details. I guess I'm a little curious as to why they would do something like this so late in the game. And I believe there are bigger and better things for ya this round and all. Good luck! PM me if you also need secondary questions. I can collaborate with ya. I'm a fellow CA applicant too with 37 + schools.

why are you not attending uc davis?
