Hi folks,
I'm a medical graduate and applying for Pathology residency. I've been reading in this forum and also was doing some research about Pathologists compensation and to be honest I've been getting mixed responses but I saw a post for Pathologist position with starting payment of 78$K to 101$K which shocked me. I mean 78$K a year is not worth it considering the time, efforts and stress someone is putting to be pathologist.
Is it worth it at this moment to continue pursuing Pathology training?
Thanks

Yes the job market is great starting salaries are 220-250 in private practice. You might be lucky to get a 150k signing bonus!!!!

Go for it!!!!!!!!!

You should read several of the recent threads on SDN, many talk about the job market.

but also ask around a bit yourself - talk to your trainees (all fields not just path trainees) at your school who are looking for a job now. Try to get a sense who is having an easy time with the job search and who might be struggling.

78K is not a believable salary for full time work btw.

You sure you it didn’t say pathologist assistant? That’s the salary range for a PA

That salary doesn't sound correct. What helped me a lot in med school was meeting with the chair of pathology at my med school hospital. I got to ask all of those types of logistical questions and get straight answers and good advice on what to expect.

Are you absolutely sure you can not find something better to do than to be a pathologist? If you have three options, please closely examine the other two before you settle with the choice of being a pathologist. This is pretty much a downtrodden field and there is nothing on the horizon. Think hard before you make this crucial decision for your career. Do you really want to be in a nearly completely commoditized medical specialty?

That salary is far too low to be accurate. Academic pathologists who are boarded certified start at a much higher salary than that. You can go to the med school library and look up the typical salary for an Assistant Professor in your region. Academic salaries also include benefits (health, dental insurance) and retirement plans.

At BU we virtually always provide a modest signing bonus, beyond just moving expenses.

In the last 2 years we have recruited nearly a dozen new pathologists. The good candidates had multiple job offers.

you probably read about Speech Pathologists or as others mentioned

starting salary in academia (which is likely the lowest of any type of path job) is roughly $150k at the lowest for a faculty instructor. Assistant professor at $175k and up.

the only doctors I’ve heard of getting $100k or less are starting Peds and FP attendings but my guess is those ways are over even for them.

Pathology is a wonderful specialty and definitely worth pursuing!

Yes. It is sure great when you can pay pathologists about one-third of what you are getting paid.
What were the salaries given to those "dozen new pathologists"?
How many were given salaries at or above $240,000?
Merritt Hawkins shows FM salary offers now averaging $241,000.

Nice salary Dr. Remick 478,000$ a year?

Here are some young pathologists who have to move to secure a job!!!! Pathology sure is rosy when your making half a mil a year.
No offense, but I have zero problem with the Chair of a major academic pathology department making that much. I make more than that and I'm just one of several partners in my private group, with likely far less responsibility than Dr. Remick.

The pathologist making 169K was listed as one of the 5 highest paid employees and finished her second fellowship in 2002. That makes me wonder if there are other pathologists earning significantly less.

I do like pathology a lot especially at level of clinical trials. I've been working in clinical trials, the role of Pathology is very appealing to me.

Don’t pay attention to those sites. Look at medscape which says median pathologist pay is 280k.

Academics (Bupath) loving that cheap labor. Guess who is getting Cerda's PC?

Academic mill or corporate mill? Going to be the only option for newly trained pathologists. Who do you want taking your PC? Good luck moving up.
