So it's getting to be about the time where we approach finals, and I'm sure many of you are starting to feel the crunch. My finals are next week.

Today, I got punched in the stomach. By Biochemistry. No matter what I do, no matter how hard I try, I cannot break a freakin' middle B on the damned tests. 4 tests in, and I have an 87, 83, 85, and 85. The way the class is taught is ridiculous. He lectures 100% out of the book adding his own anecdotes now and then, but then tests completely away from the book asking for what "he wants" when I have no idea what he freakin' wants, I know what the damn book wants.

I thought this was going to be a great class where I learned a lot. Instead it turned into a big pissing contest of who can cram the most trivial detailed information in the shortest time possible. I really wanted to do well in this course considering my poor performance in the past coupled with struggling in Ochem 2. (I have a 3.3X aacomas) I just secured the B today. 👎

Anyway, enough of my bitching. Anybody else have any stories where their best isn't good enough?

This thread's a good place to get it all of your chest before finals. Let 'er rip.

Trying to remember all that I am grateful for at this time.👍

Why do you care? Haven't you been accepted?

I took a mammalian anatomy class and going into the final exam, I was going to get a B in the course if I scored a 50, or a 100. So, it happens.

I have an 89 in 3 classes and a 79 in another.. I could end the semester with a 2.8 or a 3.8!

God, I've been in this situation like 3 times. Every time I finished with like a 3.3. 👎

Genetics; 300 students; 5% received A's. I received an awesome 89.4.

Yep, I took biochem 4 times. Yes, 4 times. The first 3 times with the same professor who is a botanist and taught it with a plant life flare, not a mammalian flare. UGH.

So my first three grades were: W,D,D
I took it again about 7 years later and got an A after it finally clicked and was taught by a biochemist who studied humans.

We have all been there.

I took a biblical archeology class that was like 1 credit. I had an A- going into the final which was worth 50% of our grade. So after I took it, I emailed the professor and said I felt so bad after the final I didn't know what to do, but I needed a C to pass because I started professional school. He said "let's see how the score comes out because you would have to score pretty low to drop below a C." So when I got my score back I got 7/50. That's not a typo. So he emailed and said "wow, no wonder you felt like crap." I emailed back and said "I screwed up. I don't fault you and you have been a fantastic professor. I can't let that happen again and I have to learn from this experience." He responded with "you got your C, good luck in the fall."

Completely irrelevant, but I think it is a fun story.

I got a couple C's once...but now I have multiple acceptances and I don't want to harm anyone anymore 😉

LOL...the old pre-med saying "but if I get a C..." [weeps]

I feel bad because I'm in my last semester of school and every time someone brags about their grades around me I act like a dbag and bring up how awesome it is that I got into med school...

Oh wellllll...I feel like I've been hearing bragging for the past 4.5 years...I'm entitled 🙄

Yup thats the curve for you.. been there plenty.
Took an anatomy class with a ridiculously high class average where a 92% got you an A- so I guess my B made more sense after I was told that.. and do you want to know what even more ridiculous? the class does NOT count as a bio class heck it doesn't even count as a SCIENCE class!!! its a freeing miscellaneous class!!!

My friend says that we could have taken a DANCE class if we wanted a miscellaneous class...

Yup that B ( with the help of a few more of its people) pretty much screwed up my gpa that semester..

any ways so now Im in this really stupid per-modern history class and our final exam is 3 hours of 15 short answers (minimum of 1 page single spaced) and 5 long answers ( minimum of 2 pages single spaced..)

So that's 25 pages in 3 hours... is it possible to fill 25 pages with anything even slightly intelligent in 3 hours?

I could vent about my cell bio class as well, I study the material and actually know the stuff but my professor takes points off for technicalities, semantics, or worse asks esoteric questions and complain that only 20% of the class managed to answer it the way he wanted. So I'll answer the question completely correctly, but still get a 0.

I can empathize, my genetics teacher was bat **** crazy she never EVER gave anyone full credit for a question even if it was verbatim from the text book. When you pointed that out to her she would say "well, but that was not exactly what I was looking for...". She would take off a quarter of a point for answers that were given in fraction form instead of decimal even though she did not specify what she wanted. She also changed her mind on whether she wanted fractions or decimals in every test and did not inform students of this...not fun...

Her question prompts were like 3 paragraphs long. WHY?

Professors are pretty much omnipotent Gods at my school, there is no arguing with their insanity.

He's just beyond me, but at least I'm doing significantly better than all my other friends in that class. They're all in major limbo. Ironically we've all done 400 level courses that the university deems harder and are doing significantly worse in this class.

I am taking a diversity course (I dropped my genetics class because I hated it and need credits) and kids in my class told me they were failing.

who fails diversity? People at my school...whyyyyyyy

Sorry what you said reminded me of this unfortunate conversation I had today.

I took Plant Physiology a few semesters ago.. Biggest mistake of my college career. The professor was a nice guy but he structured his exams completely away from what he lectured on.

<93% in all of my UG classes was an A-. Consider yourself lucky.

Get used to it also. I doubt any medical schools curve grades. At least, mine doesn't.

My UG didn't curve grades either. Not a problem here 🙂

I wasn't singling you out, but rather adding onto what you said. 👍

Just wait till you get to medical school, where you'll cover more in two weeks than you cover in an entire semester in undergrad (at least it feels that way); and where anything above an 80% makes you feel pretty good about things...

Don't beat yourself up too much over it. These things happen, just get back up and kill it next time. The worst thing you could do would be to let discouragement ruin your drive to succeed.

After taking a graduate level/medical school level biochemistry course, we covered what I learned in undergrad (3 semesters of biochem) in one semester..

After tutoring graduate medical level biochem, I can tell you that if you are making a solid B now.. You will be well prepared for biochemistry at the medical school level.

A wise biochemistry professor once said, "A good biochemist earns an A, a GREAT biochemist earns a B."

I don't even get that. At all. If you demonstrate mastery of the subject material, shouldn't you be getting an A? Biochemistry (to me) is not purely being able to memorize factoids but being able to understand what does what, when, and why.

I just transferred from a CC with a 3.6 now I'm down with 2 C's and an A this semester at my 4-year..fml

Ouch. Rock it next semester and hopefully you can explain that it was a huge adjustment, a new scene, and you put more on your plate than you could eat.

Yea I didn't get it either... Crazy biochem professor... or some dry humor. No need being neurotic about it

So.. how does adding that quot--

You know what, nevermind. We good 👍

Or maybe it was her way of relieving anxiety of the pre-meds making B's in her course...Telling them theywere doing a great job. Back to SLC's post

I bet this is it...lame joke on her part.

I had a teacher say, A students make great teachers, B students make great doctors, C students make great money.

We laughed, but the statistics of C average students lafer salaries would probably less funny

Does not compute.

I got an A in biochem and I don't think I will be prepared for med school biochem.

Good thing I've been a C, B, and A student at one point or another!

Meh. Biochem isn't that hard if you put in the time. I enjoy the class. I've only taken 1 quarter of undergrad biochem prior to this.

This is the only class where I've achieved trips for a % (twice). Anatomy is far worse (for me).

It sounds like bragging and it is. Sup.

I'm actually not scared of anatomy at all. But hey, what do I know

Math tests are long and boring. I have a B-, going on to a C+, in composition, and that's it.

LOL, what's with professors putting stuff on tests that we haven't learned,

I had a process control class where 96% was an A. Needless to say my 94.5% didn't make the cut.

Must be nice to have a curve. Never had it in high school or college.

Same. My school has a no curve policy.

I envy the hell out of my friend that went to a large state school and got an A with a 72% in Ochem 2.

I see your 72% A with my 72% C-.

Needed a 100% on my Org 2 final to get an A. I pulled a 97% and got a B. I also lost the opportunity for a great letter of rec from my professor as well because she only wrote letters for A students.

So close yet so far!

Doesn't matter, got accepted! 👍

Yes sir! She was my favorite professor so the let down was two-fold. But yeah I'm in, the past is the past.

How about this. At a CA CC, I once took an art history course where I set the curve with a 63%. I figured that I would ride on the fact that the past tests had an A for 70% so I didnt study. Quality education
