I got accepted to a research fellowship that is supposed to start on May 20th. Originally, I was planning on taking the MCAT before this fellowship but a series of situations have now led me to consider June 2nd as my first try at the MCAT.

My supervisor just sent me an email saying "See you on Friday." What do I do? I don't know how to tell her that I would like to postpone the fellowship start date to June 3rd…I'm scared I might lose the opportunity 🙁 Help please?!

Soooo. How do you see this playing out if you decide to not show up, so you can study. It's pretty obvious you need to tell her the situation, ask for the later start date, or start on Friday and study around your commitments.

I'm assuming you're applying this cycle...so you have three choices really:

1. Work studying in around your fellowship schedule.

If this isn't possible because you won't be ready for the MCAT, then:
2. Ask for a later start date.

If you will lose your fellowship because of it:
3. Then you have to choose between doing the fellowship, or taking the MCAT to apply this cycle.

Pretty straight forward.

Email your supervisor immediately (& concisely) explaining the situation and ask if you can shift the dates or do some part time until then, making sure the total hours worked is consistent with original fellowship. If you show initiative and responsibility, it's likely that they will be able to work with you without this negatively impacting your experience. If that's denied, seriously consider whether you can study concurrently with full-time research, and perhaps ask if you can have the few days before the MCAT free. When I was in a similar situation my supervisor was very flexible, but it depends on the supervisor/fellowship.

So today is the 18th. You had initially planned to take the MCAT before starting the fellowship on the 20th. If this is a last minute thing you should probably have been ready to take the MCAT around nowish right? If so, why not just work the fellowship and do the last bit of studying around your work hours? If you delayed the MCAT because you do not feel ready, then do as ed*26 said.

If this is not a last minute thing, then why on Earth are you waiting until two days before the start date to address this? Communication with your superiors (bosses) is important in the real world.

Unfortunately, it is a last minute thing. It was a combination of not feeling ready for the MCAT and a family emergency situation. I ended up canceling my May 20th MCAT last week and decided I could benefit from the two weeks for the June 2nd MCAT. I haven't booked my MCAT date yet though, but I plan on doing so as soon as I take the AAMC scored exam next Wednesday.

Ok, well in that case I would write an email to your fellowship PI saying what you just told me. Tell him due to a family emergency you were not able to effectively study for the MCAT and thus had to cancel your planned test day because of it. Tell him you scheduled to sit for the exam June 2nd and ask very very nicely if it would be possible to start the fellowship the 3rd. Tell him you apologize for the short notice and understand if there's nothing he can do. If you're respectful and apologetic then I don't think it damages you.

Not going to read the prior.

Take the MCAT, tell your super about it. Start fellowship after. Life is more plastic than you think it is 😉

I always read these expecting some dire emergency ("Help I'm stuck in a mexican jail and the MCAT's on Friday and drug lords are after me..."), and I'm consistently disappointed. Is this what passes for urgent with today's generation?

YOU decided to change the date of your MCAT and knew that this fellowship would conflict with it. What else did you expect? Deal with the consequences like the adult which supposedly you are. E-mail the supervisor and shift the date or suck it up and study around the fellowship.

Mexican jails don't have WIFI, silly.
