i had back surgery before 3 years ( for prolapsed intervertebral disc ), i matched this year in program.on april 2011 the pain come back and my surgeon advice for redo surgery.( MRI recurrent disc ).what should i do. if i agree to undergo the surgery now i am concerned that i lose the match on the same time i am concerned that the pain may be become more sever when i start the job. i dont know what to do i am very depressed . please i need a kind opinion and advice.😕😕😕🙁🙁🙁

Have you contacted the residency program where you matched and see what advice they have? You have an obligation to show up for the first day of residency if you used the NRMP to obtain the position.

Contact your soon-to-be PD. The sooner that you talk to him/her, the better chance of working out some sort of accommodation.

thank you for reply. yes i got the position through the NRMP. but i didnt contact the PD,now i can tolerate the pain but i am anxious that when i start the residency , i may deteriorate and end in the emergency room with very sever pain as before 3 yrs

This isn't really that difficult to figure out. You want to be better, the program you matched to wants a healthy resident. Do the right thing and contact them ASAP. They will work with you to get you better. Maybe have you get the surgery and let you start on a light rotation or something non-operative like ICU. Being honest with people from the beginning is never the wrong answer.
