Hi,

Im finishing up my first year of dental school. I failed my Clinical Foundations class in the winter semester and instead of allowing me to retake the practicals that I failed in the course, the professor is making me retake the entire course. This means that I cant start my second year clinical foundations courses until I retake this course next winter. Essentially, I will be spending an extra year in dental school. Does anyone know of someone in a similar situation and if there is anything I can do?

Thanks!

Summer classes are not an option? Go talk to the academic dean and see what REALLY could be done. Many times they find more reasonable ways to a problem like this than the instructor.

Another question, how bad did you fail? Have you shown improvement in other pre-clinical classes? Is anyone else in a similar situation with this class?

I personally think your school is f-up for making you reapeat a year for a pre-clinical class. That is such a harsh penelty it is unreal.

Just for comparison when you talk to the academic dean ( I highly recommend this, and not via email...face to face) here at NYU every person that fails 3 or less classes, clinical or didactic gets to remediate in the summer. If they fail that session, then they remediate the year.

Best advice I can give.

Hi,

Ive talked to our schools executive committee that handles situations like this. The dean was part of the committee. I asked them to let me remediate over the summer but they denied my request. I agree . . .my school if f-ed up and I want to transfer schools. . .but I dont think thats possible. I know of one other kid in the same position. Maybe I should have chosen to go to a school like NYU that doesnt treat their students like crap.

All I have to say is, WOW! I do not know what to say.

Is there anyway to petition this one more time and ask them as to why you must repeat the year? Then state that you feel it is unreasonable and too severe a penalty.

Don't take this sitting down, it can only go up from here if you fight it. I would talk to the dean one-on-one about this instead of in front of a committee.

As much as people talk crap about NYU on this site, it is actually very student friendly.

I wish you the best of luck and hope things turn in your favor

sorry about your situation....hope everything works out for u in the end.

I know people who were on the brink of failing out at NYU, but they had a chance to remediate in the summer and now are doing perfectly fine. They got their act together and weren't penalized by repeating a year...only had to stay in the summer. Your school is really f-up.

I'm sorry they put you in such a situation! I definitely agree with fighting as much as you can...make an appointment with some administrative people who you haven't spoken to yet, and perhaps invite the other classmate in the same situation to join you so that you both have more leverage.

May I ask which school you attend?

Listen, if there's no way around it...what are you supposed to do in your down time next year? I mean, you'd only be taking one course, right?
