So, I have been conducting research at school X for over a year now. However, last semester I went to NASA for an internship program to conduct research. I am back at school X now doing research and I applied for and received another NASA fellowship. However, for some reasons I didn't think I would be able to go this summer cuz my boss was accepting a job so I told my boss at school X that I would be here this summer. However, NASA calls me yesterday, and they want me to come and be a mentor to another student as well and teach them how to do the research there. So now I am really torn what to do?

Go with what YOU want to do. If necessary, apologize to your boss. If they have your best interest at heart, they will be more than supportive.

Wow, that is pretty cool. So what kind of research did you do?

As for the question... I think you should go with whichever one you think will benefit you in the future. If you need to more leadership, I would go mentor. If you need money, stay with your job. And if you feel bad about "deceiving" you boss, then just apologize and you may be surprised at how well he may take it. I mean, NASA stuff is pretty cool. He may have done the same thing.

Well the research I am doing now at school X, top 15 medical school, is great. We are working on a paper that will be submitted to Nature within the next year, and I will be in an author. The NASA research consisted of life detection in extreme environments such as Mars and Europa...All that to say, I don't want to upset either mentor, and I know one of them will be when I choose. I just don't like to go back on my word...

I understand you don't want to upset either one of them. Obviously you need to choose one or the other. Once you choose, make sure you tell the mentor that you did not expect the offer or you already made an offer. They would know that you did not intend to go back on your word, unless they are kinda weird or something like that. But, I am sure they won't hate you for it. If they really know you, they would understand because they like you, I assume since they are willing to hire you again. Anyway, now that you mention the research at a medical school, I am thinking the medical school stuff might be more interesting. I know life detection is cool and stuff, but I think research that pertains more to your profession is much more interesting and it applies to your future understanding. But, if you feel you will never have an experience like NASA again, then just go with NASA and make the most of it while you can. Nice experiences for both though, I am jealous. 😉

Well thanks for all of the help! I made the decision today, and I declined the NASA offer. I am grateful for the opportunity, but I didn't want to go back on my word.
